Need Recommendation - Overgrown Fig

This is my second year growing figs in containers. I have one overgrown fig, got out of hand, and do not know whether I should trim branches now, month from now or wait until early Spring next year. As Fall rolls along I will store the fig in my unheated garage for the winter. Thank You.

If i were you, i would prune after the leaves fall off. In the fall most plants put their focus into building nutrient reserves in the roots. By pruning before dormancy, the plant will put it's energy into producing lateral branch growth that would not have time to harden off for winter anyways and result in poor growth of the plant in spring time. I'd say the best time to prune excess growth for you would be a few weeks after all leaves have fallen off. Hope this info helps!

Pinch the tips for now, when dorment you can prune

How do you pinch the tips? The leaf or the wood? By hand or with a tool. Sorry for asking, I've really been wondering...

My opinion would be to wait until Spring to do any pruning. If you plan on rooting some cuttings this winter then cut them after tree is dormant, otherwise wait and shape your tree right before growth begins in 6 months.

I began pinching tips at the end of July. Because of that I have a lot of new growth in the center of the
container. Again, exactly what I wanted.

Thanks,
Weggy
