Negretta Plant

Here is my Negretta plant in its height of summer beauty.
I hear the figs are good, i will taste some next month instead of just reading about them !

Martin,

Your fig tree is like an Eagle spreading its wings and showing all its glory.
That is one beautiful tree! Looks flawless!

Hope the fruit will pay off for you.

Boy, You are a fan of dark figs only! LOL
Keep posting more.

My Negretta plant is now starting to ripen som figs.

Here is ripe Negretta.
This plant produce for first time ripe fig in 3 season and worth the wait.
Only tasted 1 so far but all i say for now is thats Amore , but need to taste more.
I really look forward to tasting more shortly and then make decision of what pot to put this 1 in for future.
When i get a better gauge on taste as i eat more i post i about it. But for very first impression its really a treat for my taste and i have a real good feeling about the future at this point of this plant.

I have been eating more Negretta figs.
Yes plant makes nice and good tasting figs in my yard. What i like to say is i do at this point like taste of my Violet de Bordeaux better now number 1 tasteing in my yard and eating it with skin on as i like to do with my figs is a pleasure.
The Negretta skin i have noticed is not so much as it is to chewy and once past that the fig is good otherwise.

Edit: I also want to mention last several day including last night we had good periods of rain and a few Negretta figs had very small split at the eye i did notice this morning, i did eat some and they tasted fine but this i mention.

Same time i picked the Violet de Bordeaux i picked those figs as well and saw no splits at the eye.
This my area in my yard.

Little update. As many know figs can be somewhat confusing at times especially when young and or producing for first time.
This is one of those times for me where i have to wait as i ate more nice fully ripe figs today from tree.
The skin was not chewy as first reported BUT the flavor was just plain all of a sudden !
Go figure.
There are more figs on tree that will ripen in time as tree is still not adjusted and crop is very sporadic in getting ripe which can happen with trees first producing they simply need more seasons .
So i have to wait another season to see how they taste and then if similar another season .
Hopefully the figs will improve with maturity if not well ...........

But it teased me once in a good way so i give this type a chance.

Very nice Martin. Ciao

Well here we go again.
Since last post about this plant i have had more and more figs from plant .
The first fig i ever ate was good from plant, since then its been going downhill for some reason , the taste is just not there for me , also the skin is to thick to my likeing.
Today i picked several more nice and ripe and a couple a little less ripe out of curiosity. I ate the less ripe peeled and they were less than average tasting, i tried a nice ripe one and spit it out cause the skin was way to leathery and chewy i dont like that, so i peeled a nice ripe one and the taste was just not there for me.
I had high hopes after tasting the first fig from plant and now after many more its not impressing me in taste . I can deal with peeling them but has to be a great tasting fig at least not average or good but great to my taste buds. Yes im picky and will continue to be for my hard work.
Next season it needs to impress taste wise or will chop it up and sell scion the following winter on ebay.
I have no problem chopping up known named fig plants to make room for more to try.

It is well-known that too heavy crop/low sunshine/too much water will all lead to "watery" taste in fruit; There is just not enough factory area on the plnat to make enough sugar (and flavour - your tertiary metabolites) to make the fruit taste good. That would be why your figs ripening without rain, in high temperature and just a few to a branch, will always be better than heavy crops. I know that for peahces there is a ratio of so many leaves per fruit that should be left to have good fruit (size & taste) - I assume it is the same with figs.

The above poster hit the nail in the head.
I think your tree is too young to have his best fruits.
It produced too many too soon,so no Energy to make them best.
I had 17 figs on a new rooted cutting of Adriatic JH.
I removed 10,left 7,out of wich 3 were older, like the first wave, and four were younger so they are not ripe yet.
The three that got ripe are delicious, and I think by me removing the 10 too many fruits helped a lot.

I've got the mother of the tree Martin  has. The skin is a bit tougher but not thicker than hardy chicago or Celeste. The fig last year was tasteless but this year was very good. I wouldn't say it's better than Ronde de Bordeaux.

The bottom line is, it might not be the tastiest fig, but it is a promising variety for it's beauty in the landscape with the different tones of color, the adaptation to dry climate which can be suitable to California, and the Southeast. It seemed to be okay even in the rain, and never split or soured.

Thanks for the comments. Yes i'm very familar with watering , branch pruning for sun and pruning branch tips for ripeining of figs in my climate especially cause of our weather. But i always welcome the comments "always" and i keep mind open to them . ; )

My Negretta is in its 3rd full season. Last season put out fruit to late to ripen here, this season a little earlier and there still gettting ripe but much slower now because of the weather.
Plant is still adjusting in my opinion.

For its size Herman yes good point you state - maybe to many fruit as it has more branches than most its size despite it dwarf type growth for its age.

Bass, my plant came from George on ebay if you supplied cutting to him then yes yours would be parent plant then to both.
yes the skin is thin just as i have read on some sites yet thick in taste, to chewy for me but i see what happens in a year or so.
My thinking to date is i would like to see fig taste improve much and skin not so tough otherwise i have to make room for another plant to try.

Fig plants this season that impressed me at even younger age are
Dark Portuguese
Ronde de Bordeaux
both these plants figs gave me good first impression for all there figs that were eaten.

Also would like to hear from George how his Negretta figs tasted , were they good or average to you ?

First time on tree im seeing sap form around the eyes of some figs.
Have not tasted these yet as they are not ready to pick. We been having up and down temps this month and tomorrow will jump to 90 degree's with strong winds then a cold front comes in at night with rain . The group of figs getting ripe on tree now are turning nice and dark lilttle by little and they are not ripening as fast now with the up and down temps and cool nights sometimes in high 40s.
