Negronne disappointment?

Hi James
Do you have an idea of what variety this fig actually is?
By the way have meaning to call you to visit but got really busy last few weeks.  With the farm and the figs April and May are a handful.
Thanks

Pino -- I have no problems helping out on a Negronne tree. I got 3 big trees and no problems air layering one. It
Is a late ripener here and need green house to jump start. Let me know.

I got a new fig tree today. It is labeled "Negronne" and it has somewhat different leaves than the one I got last year that was labeled "Violet de Bordeaux (Negronne)." I am just going to have to wait and see at this point. Both plants are still young.

Thanks for the offer Paul!
But I already have a VdB and it should produce nicely this year.  I will probably keep it in a container since I don't think it is cold hardy for zone 6.

I purchased the Negronne because the information on the internet from EU seemed to indicate that Negronne was a different fig (Broader leaves and a bigger fig).
But it seems that VdB and Negronne are similar enough and have been interchanged often.  At this time the differences may just be due to cultural practices or environment?

Steve,
Good luck with you new Negronne let us now how it compares to your VdB.

Hi Joe
I have a small negronne from mine,
I'll bring it down when I visit if you want it.

Hi Raf
I have an extra VdB so we can exchange if you like.  I have a feeling they will be very similar.

Thanks for the photos Agus.
How did it taste?

I am not sure, but it wasn't black mission, didn't have the sharp leaf margins like the above tree do, it could have had problems being a juvenile tree putting on excessive growth?  It wasn't VdB either, my guess is that it was Negronne but I didn't manage it well could have been my problem, it also had some FMV as well while others who have bought from Danny didn't see it and other trees I got from Danny were fine.  I have no good answer on the variety but it did not resemble the above tree which looks fantastic to me.

I am planting more trees this weekend so it's good you haven't come lately as I have had my hands full myself.

I got negronne from difference source than "Danny", It was cuttings from tree bearing taste figs locally, However, It grows very slow, Is it normal for negronne?

I have two Negronnes, one I bought as a plant from Rolling River that is a very slow grower
and the other I got as a cutting last year from a friend in Europe. The cutting grows
like a weed and was 7 ft. tall, with a thick stalk, before I cut it back. I think the Negronne
sold in this country is something else.

Preemptive apology for opening a can-of-worms.

There has been confusion regarding the Vista variety and VDB, PN, Negronne, Nero 600, etc.  Somewhere along the line these trees I have been conflated, although there is no doubt that some of these are synonymous.  To add to the confusion is the UCD report that Vista and VDB are genetically identical (or something like that, it seems that those results were also confusing as expressed on that thread).  That could mean one of 2 things. 1) They really are the same or; 2) these varieties were conflated prior to UCD receiving the sample of VDB and they received a "Vista", while another variety that is known by some as VDB still exists and was not tested against the Vista.

Regardless of the UCD stuff here is my opinion: There are at least 2 varieties out there that get mixed up in this mess. One is definitely what is widely regarded as Vista. It is a good fig and had a distinctive leaf pattern where it routinely throws somewhat pointy leaves with wider lobes (often with only 3 lobes on them). The other variety is different and I call it PN, VDB, or Negronne so I can keep them distinct. I'm not saying that I am right about the labels.  It is a great fig which has a very similar, perhaps identical, looking fruit.  However, its leaves are very different and does not throw the wider lobe pointy leaves like the Vista. It does throw single spade ( even grape-like sometimes) leaves, long fingered leaves, and occasional jagged long fingered leaves.  We should have a thread with pics to aid in the distinction.

Regardless, neither variety should disappoint as long as the tree is mature enough and the figs are allowed to ripen fully. VistaLeaves.jpg  VDBleaves2.jpg  VDBLEAVES1.jpg

I hear people describe the VdB and/or Negronne two different ways: 1) they are anywhere from complex, berry-like, very tasty, to meh; and 2) words fail them because of the depth of the flavor and sweetness and (take another bite...mumble) oh,man...incredible...best...mumble.
The first description seems to be about figs that have a distinctive white band around the edge when cut in half, and strawberry redness; the second is about figs (usually smaller, it seems) that are deeply colored, kind of maroon/ox blood red, maybe a little purple, and little to no lightness around the perimeter. I want the second kind. I think it's fun to investigate.

Very Sweet if full rippened
