Negronne Jackpot

Right after work I drove down to a Nursery that I discovered was the only place that had figs in Spokane. It was a place 5 minutes from my apartment and I never knew it. One of the workers which was the only person there got really excited when I asked about the trees. She had a accent so I knew that she wasn't originally from America. She was from Madrid, Spain which explained why she was so excited about the figs. To her Negronne was the favorite of all the figs. Her and the owner which I guess is also from Europe really loved them. They even got really sad when a tree died from frost. She told me to ask the owner about any figs from Europe, which I will when I meet her.

The lady was really nice, maybe because my uniform reminded her of her husband that was also in the Air Force. She knew a lot of information about the trees. From what she was telling me, I now believe she brought these trees from Europe. They also sold Lattarula Figs, but were sold out. She tried to give me 3 gallon pots for free, but I insisted that i pay for them since the two tree I got was only $12.

I don't think $24 for these two tree were a bad price at all. I might even go back to get more and maybe give them to a member here to share.

I repotted both trees into the bigger containers.

She wants me to come back and visit again. Maybe I can see if there is a history behind this figs. Or better yet see if the owner can get some rare figs from Europe if she goes back again(assuming that she is also from there).

Thanks for sharing. WOW, what roots! Now I see why Negronne does well growing in a pot...
A BIG pot! Good to hear from a fellow fighead from the Eastern (WA.) front. Here in Tacoma
there are some HUGE fig trees in the old ethnic neighborhood that came over from Europe.

You must tell me where. I must get some of those figs. Maybe if I'm ever in that area.

$12 is a steal for those figs.  Congratulations!

Definitely plenty of roots!
But I hope that you did score them top-to-bottom at least on one side before potting-up?

'Circling' roots are known to self-strangle any tree as it grows bigger...

Nice find, heathy looking trees. Got them just in time to up pot them!

good looking trees. if you are going to use same soil mix, run knife through those roots like gorgi said. if different soil mix, i would bare root and leave under shade for awhile. VdB/Negornne is one of my favorite also.

Yeah, that is a steal. Around here the local grocery store was selling brown turkey plants about that size for $30 a pop last spring!

Great looking trees americanfigboy, good luck with them.

Nice find!!!!

Nicely done, if there is a story behind them please share it.

Lucky indeed!  Those are some thick roots!

Jarrett,

You need to hook up the nursery with the forum.

Good story. Nice trees. Ideal price.
Continuing the drum beat, the roots are good looking and healthy but the encircling could be problematic. If you did not score them, then I suggest you unpot them and follow the sage advice of Gorgi and Pete.

I'm going back today and I will ask then to join if possible. I will also uproot and take care of the roots. I loosened them up buy didnt cut them.

do you root prune it before you uppot it?

I usually always does but forgot about it this time. It is fixed now. I loosened up all the roots that were wrapping around the tree.
