Good Morning Everyone,

I am new to propagation, cultivation, and this forum. I planted my first Desert King Fig in ground this year. I am really interested in acquiring other varieties but am unable to find anyone who sells different varieties of figs plants or cuttings locally. Mostly just Dk. I was wondering if anyone could please point me in the right direction? I live in Mission, BC, Canada (zone 8a). Any advice on my DK?

I would suggest you google fig nursery BC and see what comes up.  Am sure there are members in Canada who will steer you.    Joyce

Thank you Joyce. I will try that. I spoke to a fellow who is growing kiwi and figs in the Fraser Valley but does it commercially and couldn't help me. He gave me another company to contact but they also do volume orders for Nurseries and mostly DK.

Here is a link that has a couple Canadian Nurseries, both great places to find nice trees.  Just scroll down a little.

Thank you so much COGardener. I checked out both sites and one of nurseries does not ship, pick up only in Ontario. Now that is a long drive

Hi All,

I contacted the other nursery and got an email response :) I was told that the following fig varieties of my liking are only sold as Tropical plants and the seller can not assist in determining if they would survive Mission weather ( with winter protection of course) which I still have to figure out. The guy who sold me the desert King said to put a garbage bag over it for the first 2 years. Not sure if that is a good idea as the plant won't get any air. Does anyone know if these varieties will be okay in zone 8a?

Look around.   Are others in your area growing figs?
I know on Vancouver island there are many people growing figs and they don't cover them for the winter.  The issue they have is getting some figs to ripen because of the lack of hot sunny weather and constant rain.

Your welcome.

Oh darn. ...have to go to the nurserie to pick out figs. .....  I wish I had one of those here.

I have been looking pino, not many people grow figs in Mission. I am at a higher elevation, Mission is mostly mountains/ very hilly but it gets a few degrees warmer than the coastal areas. Vancouver island does get a lot of rain, not as warm probably due to the breeze by water. I will try google to see if I can find some one there. Thank you so much.

Hehe COGardener, Ontario is easily a 5 day drive from Mission. My back is not able to endure such a journey...the joy of getting older. But in hind sight it is still easier than walking there :) Joking aside, if I am ever in the area I would really like to visit Adriano's Fig Trees. His collection/knowledge seems extensive.

As long as you grow figs in containers, zone 8 is pretty fig friendly.  You'll just have to put them in a warm spot in winter.  Choose varieties with a short ripening season.  I heard Osborne Prolific is good.  Hardy Chicago should do fine.

Good luck!

Suzi

A 5 day trek is quite a distance to drive indeed.  Perhaps if you talk to them by phone they may ship to you given the circumstances.

I'm in zone 5 at high elevation as well, my put culture figs do great.
