New Again

Hi Fig Forum,
Im not really new but have been off line for a number of years. Work, illness, other fish to fry.
I am in Pacific Northwest, Southwest Washington State. Zone 8a
I have about 15 fig trees, most started from cuttings and all but one start in-ground. Some are duplicates.
Petite negri
Hardy Chicago
Lattarula
King
Carini from Figgy Frank
Dominic from Coop
Sal's
LSU Tiger
LSU Champagne
Smith
Atreano
Brunswick
The last start is Celeste

This looks like a good fig year. The mild and short winter benefited my trees, None ripe yet but some brebas getting big. The figs forming for main crop also look like my best ever. The most promising brebas this year are Lattarula, Frank's Carini, King and a few on Brunswick
Not looking to add more, this is all I can handle,
My biggest fig growing challenges are deer and voles. Fencing and hardware cloth are helpful but not 100% effective.
My other fruit trees include apple, pears, Asian pears, plums, cherries, pawpaws, and persimmons. This looks like my first persimmon crop this year, Saijo and Nikita's Gift.
I've done a lot of grafting, apples, pears, plums, cherries, kiwi, persimmins, but only one fig graft. Looks like it took, maybe.
That's all I can think of at the moment.
Daniel

Welcome back to the forum.  I graft apples and pears, and also live in Battle Ground, Washington.  I am looking forward to reading your posts.

Hi Daniel
So nice to hear from you again. Good luck with your trees this year and keep in touch

Hi Daniel!  Good to see you sir!  I hope all is well.

Welcome Back!

Hello. :)

Welcome back

Thanks for the warm welcome back!

Frank and Coop, both of your trees are doing great. I have high hopes for an excellent crop this year.
Frank's Carini had great figs last year. The brebas are getting fat, and lots of main crop starting, I think it compares well in this area to Lattarula, which says a lot. It's a really good fig here.
Coop's Dominic isn't making brebas at least yet. but the main crop is looking promising. This will be my first chance to taste them. Really looking forward to it.
Casey, Im in Battleground on NE 284th. If you like deer, I can send you a whole family of them.

Hi Daniel! Welcome back! Two of my best growers are unk carini, and Dominic. Haven't tasted Dominic yet, but carini was on the larger side last year and definitely took the cake for sweetest fig! Make sure you post some pics when you get a chance:)

Welcome back Daniel!

I have 2 healthy trees that started as cuttings from you 2 years ago - a LSU Tiger and a Champagne.  Thank you again for them!  Is there anything new that you are looking for in the way of fig trees?

Daniel,  You are about fifteen minutes away from us.  I'll take the deer and trade you an opossum and a couple of raccoons!  I hope you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Mike Im looking forward to those figs and definitley want to post photos.

Ed thanks for the update, that's very rewarding to hear! My LSU Tiger is my most vigorous grower. this year the leaves are the biggest I've seen. I cant add more fig trees now - more than I can handle! I do have a Celeste in container, it gets fertigated so it will have a head start for next year when it will replace a nonperformer - a Sal's fig that just isnt doing much. LSU Tiger is extremely vigorous here. Maybe because we buried our dead chickens near it, and they served as plant food? Nice big figs, too. This year it's just main crop, growing very fast. Champagne is not as vigorous for me, we only had 2 dead chickens last year and it didn't get any .

Casey, I would be getting the better part of that deal! Deer are just rats on steroids.

We just used up the last of our dried figs from last year. We dry them in a food dehydrater. I used them a lot for a sourdough whole wheat bread with maple syrup, figs, and walnuts. They are also good in oatmeal.

Wellcome beck Daniel
