New and LF Fig

Hey Everyone! I'm a complete fig newbie. I've really never tasted or even seen an actual fig or fig tree. I've had processed or packaged fig products but that's really it. I've gardened, vegetables, most my life with my family but now that I have my own garden and small greenhouse I've decided to let up on vegetables and to grow things I'll actually enjoy more. I am a fruit fanatic! I could eat fresh fruit all day everyday. So I'm trying to get things as I can afford to, a little here and there. There is one item that in most of my research has been fairly universal and that's of course Figs. People seem to live fresh Figs and I know I'm missing out lol. So I want to grow some Figs. I live in zone 7 in NC which is hot, humid summers and below freezing winters. From what I've read, Violette de Bordeaux seems to be lived by most. Plus Celeste, Mission, Brown Turkey, etc. For me I'd be happy with any fresh fig at this point. So I'm hoping someone out there can help me out. I don't have much but if I can get something growing I'll be happy. I do have Panama Red Passion flower seedlings, Sweet Sandpaper Fig seedlings (Ficus Opposita, supposedly the best Sandpaper Fig, Holy Basil/Tulsi seedlings (Rama), a couple Panax Ginseng (2 year old roots) and a small Venus Fly Trap (2 inch, from leaf pulling) if anyone is interested in trading. Sorry for the long post and thanks ahead of time for any info, cuttings or both.

Welcome! I'm new, too. I had never tasted a fig either. Many fruit trees do not grow well on my area, but figs, pears, and pomegranates are recommended. So I bought the only 3 types available at the time (Celeste, Brown Turkey & Texas Everbearing) and neglected them in pots for a few years. I didn't realize that the figs had to ripen on the tree, so I was hesitant to even taste one after the first try. When I finally tasted a truly ripe fig, it was like very sweet candy. Unfortunately, the squirrels had long since knocked the name tags off, so I'm not sure which variety it was.

I now have a 10' tall White Marseilles tree that produced its first real crop this year. Last year we had a late freeze and no figs. It was worth the wait. I have even converted the neighbor, who promptly bought 2 of the same online at a place called Petals From The Past (not a great selection of figs there, but the shipping was fast). I dont know which varieties are hardy in your area, but I would imagine that many would work. Good luck!

welcome.   I would advise all new growers to start with Celeste.  Its pretty cold hardy, vigorous, productive, adaptive and excellent eating.  You can add the more "exotics" later on.

Welcome to the forum!  We have a few members in NC.  Search for posts by Snaglpus and you'll find listings of his favorite figs.  Some of them will be easier to find than others.

@Llamalady-Congrats on getting your first good crop of Figs. Must have been great when you realized how goot it was, especially after trying one that wasn't ripe before. I've been looking locally at nurseries for any fig trees but no luck. If I can't find good cuttings it might be awhile for me but I'm hoping some pop up soon.

@bamafig-Thats good for me. It's actually one of the few I was hoping to get anyway because I found a post about what people thought were their best Figs in their area and Celeste was on most of the NC growers list. Is there anyone or anywhere that you know of that sales cuttings for a good price? I am afraid I won't be able to get them to root and hate to spend a lot for just 2 cuttings that I kill lol.

@rcantor-Thanks for that info. I just hope I can get any at this point lol.

Cuttings might be hard to come by this time of year.  There are some nurseries that do sell very small trees for cheap though.  For example, Edible landscaping, Burnt Ridge Nursery, Petals from the Past.

This time of year the choice will be slim    wait until this fall  for cuttings and when mail order nurserys crank up.   It might be fun to travel around your home town and scope out old trees  and make friends with the owners    that is like a treasure hunt and you will have some cuttings for trade this fall.    you might check independent nurserys around your area.   Never know what treasure might be lurking

Petals from the Past has excellent trees, $9 for 1 gallon size.  They are having their annual walking tour of the Fig tree orchard this Sat 7/25.  I hope to get by there as its only 20 miles away.

welcome, wish you to grow many fig trees.

Some people find celestes in their local big box stores.  In GA you can hardly avoid tripping over a celeste in a nursery.
