Nice!  I do wonder if you have trouble keeping the moisture in the pots and not so much in the air? How often do you water your pots?

Very nice Pete.  Thanks for sharing.  There's still room for more varieties in there too!

i don't water until they are ready to move to 1 gal container. i moved some out of old set up to another old type bin. it was too crowded and one of the cutting was showing sign of mold. even it out so there will be more air circulation. i air them out 1-2 hrs a day.

Very nice, Pete.  I like your method of one big bin as opposed to capping each individual cup.   I will try that next year.   I may even go to it this year as I am getting tired of removing all the caps to air them out every day.  (And I only have 19 cuttings).

You don't start them out in the cups, right?  You use the baggie method to get roots first?

Hmm, interesting.  I have cuttings in a clear tote similar to that.  I have a heat mat under it.  It seems that my soil dries out and isn't enough for the roots.  I end up with lots of humidity and fairly dry soil.  It's a 70/30 mix. I also ended up with a spot of mold on one of the cutting's terminal bud.

dave,

i tried going straight to cup with 50/50 mix (without peat pot). that worked. but, i had enough failure with them that i went back to baggie. after i see the roots or at least i see the top growth, moving to them into cups (peat pot method) more or less give me very good results.

sarah,

i don't use any "extra" heat. my study is always above 75-80 degrees. don't need any extra heat. heat mat might be drying out your soil. also, i use peat pot method. i don't guess as to how much moisture is in the soil. if the peat pot turns light khaki, that's the time to water the cuttings.

Looks great, Pete!  And nice varieties!

Thank, Pete. I think I need to look up the peat pot method.  I have to use a heat mat because we use a wood stove for our sole heat source.  It is not consistent and the room I put the cuttings in is a colder area.  It's just impractical to put them anywhere else.  Thanks again!

Sarah,

Peat pot method uses 3" peat pot and 16oz clear cup with 1:1 porting or seedlings soil and perlite. You pre-wet soil and peat pot. You put three/four 1/4" hole on the bottom of 16oz cup. Put small amount of soil mix into the cup then you twist peat pot on top of it so the rim of peat pot is slightly below the rim of 16oz cup. Make sure pest pot bottom hole is open. You insert/plant the cutting into the peat pot. Make sure the top of the soil covers the peat pot rim.

It's like double pot. Excess water will move down to soil mix between peat pot and the clear cup and drain out. Other water will be drawn away from the soil between wall of peat pot wall and clear cup wall. This leaves ideal amount of water for the cutting.

Water when the peat pot is light khaki color.

Be careful of peat pot method. As effective as it is, if too much moisture is present around peat pot in cup, it will grow mold and make its way to the cutting. Water conservatively.

Looks great Pete! I'm having good luck also with the large clear bin. I start my cuttings directly in the cups.

like dominic said.. don't water too much after the peat pot is set up. don't water till it flows out of the bottom. pre-moisture the soil mix and the peat pot and just use "mist/shower" setting and just wet to settle the soil.
