I don't normally do this but I was surprised by the response of this new seller of Galicia Negra when I asked.

Me:
Are you a forum member?
Thank You.

parkekelle-0:
What do mean by forum member

Me:
Forgive me, but If you don't know what a forum is, then how do you know that your fig is a Galicia Negra?

parkekelle-0:
Perhaps you misunderstood. What forum are you talking about.

Me:
Any fig forum?

parkekelle-0:
I'm not aware of the fig forums I am only selling them.

Me:
Please provide your source of the Galicia Negra and any fruit photos if any.
Thank You

I took the pictures myself with my phone.

Do the photos look like the correct variety? Not everyone is smooth and professional selling on Ebay and it doesn't necessarily indicate dishonesty. If you don't get a reasonable answer to your very reasonable questions don't bid.

Perhaps you missed the point of my post.
This has nothing to do with photos, dishonesty or me bidding.
It has to do with circulating whether intentionally or unintentionally the wrong variety under the same name.

I don't even know how this seller would know about Galicia Negra if not for the forums or Bass himself.  It's not like they sell Galicia Negra at the local Wally World.  Very sketchy.

I think Harvey might have a video on YouTube with it also.
I think,not 100% sure

No pictures = no trust.

Of 325 or so varieties GN has the largest leaf. (Right now). I could send you a picture of my leaf tomorrow if that would help. I would be very skeptical that he would not be prepared for your questions.

I just snapped a photo of two varieties that I currently have.
The first one to correctly guess these two varieties from their leaves side by side wins his choice of cuttings from either one of these two.
This ends next Sunday.

In order to be fair the seller just got back to me and the following was his answer.

I know that they are of the correct variety since my father told me what kind it is. I understand your concern for the validity of the variety. My father gets them from 2 trusted sources, grows them, and evaluates them to make sure they are the same. The two he got these from is 77peony and plant creator. The one up for sale is from 77peony.

Well that's bad news for him.  Isn't 77peony a known scammer?

That's probably bad news for the buyer(s) who has to wait for three or four years in order to find out whether his father was right or ended up with a Hardy Chicago.
Now there's nothing wrong with a Hardy Chicago:)

Trusted sellers...sigh. If the story is even true, we've got a seller who has a source who doesn't check his sources.

Well that reply says all you need to know. I'm amazed 77P actually sent someone something that had life in it.

Perhaps, you could ask him about his auction.

The way I see it, If it turns out to be something else, the new plant will end up getting propagated exponentially as Galicia Negra and not in the distant future we will have more than one Galicia Negra being circulated.

That's all.

The more I think about this the more disturbing it is.  I'm sure plant-creator doesn't want to be lumped in with 77peony.  I see three options: this story is false, the father is unable to distinguish fig varieties, or plant-creator and 77peony are distributing the same variety.  Since I don't think we can believe 77peony is selling an actual Galicia Negra, this basically leaves no credibility for this new seller.

He could have just as easily typed "fig cuttings" in eBay search and picked two random names of other sellers.  No way to know for sure.  Just think what a nice referencing tool it would be if we had a eBay Sellers List sticky thread comprised of active members of this forum.  Might be easier to keep track of than the inverse.  eBay scammers come and go.

YIKES

So he knows a guy, who knows a guy...I smell BS

Okay.  I've looked at this picture three or four times.  I swear they look the same to me.  I have no idea what variety so I'll guess Galicia Negra ;-)

Cheryl,
They are not the same . What I was trying to say is that it is extremely difficult for anyone to guess which is which by simply looking at leaves.
In this case you're looking at two totally different varieties. One is rare and it's not a Galicia Negra. I don't have this one:)

Edit: Some varieties might be easier to identify than others due to their unique features, but in the end it's a guessing game.

Are you sure you didn't post the same pic twice? All the leaves are in the same positions on both. I'd say Stella.

It is the same picture, but the two front leaves side by side are from two different varieties. Sorry for the confusion.
