New Fig fruitition

New Fig person here, Gil from NW Florida near Pensacola FL. I remember eating fig off the tree way back when I was a kid. I enjoyed them so much that I made sure we had a fig tree planted where ever we lived. Turkey figs, I guess they were Brown Turkey figs? I thought a fig was a fig. Little did I know there was a whole "Fig Cult" out there of which I guess I'm now a member.  I have 2 Large Turkey fig trees in my back yard that are approximately 7-10 yrs old and my family loves them including the chickens, dog and deer. I had no earthly idea there were so many figs out there and one day I just decided to purchase a few more trees for the orchard and was shocked to see hundreds of varieties. I  recently acquired 15 other varieties (Black Mission, Texas Blue Giant, Peter's Honey, Malta Black, Ficazzana Black, Ficazzana Bianco, (Purple, Green, White and Black Paticans), Purple Mini and Mini Nut, Sarizeybek, Bardacik and the Green Fig.  I was looking to add a few more that were considered exceptional or that would make a good wine or preserves and I came across this website. So if anyone had any idea on figs for wine or preserves I am all ears. I was also looking to add a Lemon Fig and LSU Tiger or Tyger? I had the LSU Purple Haze but my wife killed it during a transplant.  I know very little about figs in general except for what I've read here. I just enjoy the fruit and wanted to try more.  I live in Zone 8a.

Welcome! Glad you joined us! :)

Welcome. You are already hooked.

I started out in St. Pete, m5allen, off 1st st. and 74th ave N. and still have family down there. I also saw that there was someone up here in the Pensacola area. I so wanted to visit but I don't think he accepted visitors. Looks like I can learn a lot here. I will just keep reading.
Thanks everyone.

Welcome from Southern California.  Any fig can make wine as long as you add sugar, but you would need a high brix fig for pure fig wine.  We have a wine grape vineyard, and I've been looking for a fig so sweet, but it's not easy, and unfortunately a sweet fig one place will not be as sweet in another.  Climate and conditions make a huge difference.

I'd be more inclined to infuse some Everclear with purple figs to get color and flavor, and maybe use candied violets in the simple syrup................  One day.

Welcome! Pensacola is beautiful place;) I lived in Gulf Breeze during my high school years and miss it very much. A lot of good memories left behind there. Be careful planting in ground there. I've read that the RKN can be hard on figs in that white sand soil. Good luck and keep the reports coming!
