New fig grower here, looking for cuttings!

Hello fig community,

I am new to growing figs.  I love the fruit, I have a decent amount of gardening experience, but have never grown figs.  I'm trying to find some decent cuttings to get started and have read all over this forum that I shouldn't get them anywhere but here.

I am looking for these types just from what I have researched about flavors and my area (Ohio), but am open to trying any species an experienced grower thinks would be a good starter for me.

Celeste
Brown Turkey
Florea
Longue a'Aout
Mavra Sika
Negretta
Portajal Rimada
Sudliche Weinstrasse

Does anyone know where I could find some of these cuttings?

Jon at Encanto Farms (there's a link on the forum's home page) sells them, as do several other forum members--try searching through old threads for info on the best sources.

It is the tail end of cutting season. Herman2 has some for sale. kk has some plants too. All of the varieties H2 sells should be good for you in Ohio. kk has a Marseilles Blk. VS and Sal's EL that would be a great start for you. The reputable fig sellers on eBay seem to always mention their member name, or it is the same, so look for that and search around a little for more info on what they have. Welcome to the forum!
p.s. you just missed Florea, maybe he will list another batch?

I started with Jon, he is all out of cuttings right now.  :-(

Hi Hoosierbanana,

Who had Florea?

Marius, click the link to see, you missed it by a few hours : (

Gregory,

It sounds like you and I are trying to do the same thing at the same time.  Keep me in the loop. I'll trade success/failure stories with you.

Not a good time of the year to request cuttings.  People start pruning trees in late fall/early winter.  The forum is usually flooded with requests at that time.  Why not hang out and get to know everyone until then?  It's generally bad form to sign up and start requesting cuttings without participating.  Too many fly-by-night folks have done that in the past (grab-and-dash).

Yeah Octo, Jason said it well. Even mine near Chicago are all awake from garage winter storage so i stop posting scion on ebay .
As mentioned get to know a few folks as some of the older members have seen many come request cuttings for postage , trades, etc etc never to be heard from again and have done so in bad faith not reciprocating from their end.
Not saying your like this one way or another just saying its happened in past.

There are some small plants on ebay as of now from forum members as another way to go about it, but if rooting is something your wanting to do most members have stopped sending scionwood.
If your unsure about an ebay listing just ask about it here on forum.

I too am relatively new here, and feel extremely lucky to have gotten in on the very end of cutting season. And before I even was able to fully investigate the figs I wanted. But the opportunity was fleeting and I was able to get enough cuttings, mostly through purchasing on ebay or from Jon (our forum host), to satisfy my wishes.

Right now I can hardly wait for next year's cutting season as I continue to learn more. Though if I get good rooting on the fig cuttings I managed to acquire,

heaven knows what I'm going to do with them all.

Thanks for all the replies.  I was planning to pay for them, and am just being hasty because I know it's the end of the cutting season and don't really want to wait until next year.  :-)

Those old adages "patience is a virtue", "money can't buy you everything", and "come on in, have a beer" come to mind.

I might have made that last one up, but I mean it anyway.
