New fig grower looking for recommendation for Bellevue, WA (7b)

Hello,

I just removed a large fir tree in front of my west facing house and would like to plant a fig tree in its place.  The location gets a ton of sun in the summer months and would be an ideal location IMHO for a fig tree.

Just wondering which varieties would do well here, are there certain figs that do extra well in the Seattle/Bellevue climate?

On my shortlist:
  • Lattarula
  • Desert King
  • Black Mission
Thanks for any suggestions!
-Paul

  • Black Mission
  • Black Mission is a poor choice for areas that have lots of rain during the ripening period. Fruits will swell, split and sour. Desert King only produces a breba crop, IIRC. Did you check the thread stuck to the top of the forum discussing "what grows in your area"?

Welcome to the forum btw ;)

Both Desert King & Latarrula would do well. Currently both my DK & Latarrula are giving me lots(hundreds) of figs. Both are most reliable for Pacific Northwest. For productivity it will be DK.  With BM, likely it will die if kept outdoors. If not you will see few figs as the colder spring weather will make the brebas drop and main crop need higher heat units to ripen come late Sept/Oct. otherwise they taste terrible. I gave up on my BM long time ago. Other variants you can consider that produces reliably here in Vancouver, British Columbia are Longue d'Aout, Osborne Prolific, Hardy Chicago, Marseillies VS and the new one Gino. Other variants like Atreano, BT's, Stella & Negronne commonly marketed here do not do as well without greenhouse help.

Note - DK, Latarrula can be grown in-ground further away from the house. Others -- as close as possible to the house where micro climate or pot culture helps.

If those are your three choices then go with the Desert King.

Don't know about the breba only, Adraino has a big one in his yard and he lives near Toronto, Ontario, Ca. Little more extreme Winters.

It produces tons of large figs all season long.

Welcome to the forum.  It is really a very good place to get information for figs.  You will probably end up getting more fig trees than what you plan to.  :)

Have you check out kiwibob's website?

I am a little bit north of your place, totem lake area.  I am growing many varieties from cuttings, so I will not know what good choices are for Puget Sound area for few more years.

thanks everyone, I planted one Lattarula and one Desert King in front of my house. Now just curious about how often to water? We've had a cool spring/summer so far and I water every two to three days.

    Thanks!

I would say that the watering you are doing is absolutely sufficient - that is about how much I would be watering if our temps were in the 85-90ºF range every day of the week.

It is very important to keep the root zone wet (but not "swimming") for the first year after planting.   Proper drainage is critical, but I am guessing you don't have a lot of clay up in the PAC-NW ;)
