New Fig Tree!

Hey guys,

I just registered to this forum and its great to find a community that is dedicated to fig growing! I purchased a Brown Turkey fig and it already has fruit on it!

Here are my concerns/questions:

1. I plan on keeping the tree in a pot (18" diameter). I live in Chicago so there is no way I'd be able to keep it outside in the winter. I want to bring it indoors for the winter. Now do I have to cover the tree while it's inside?

2. I've had the tree for a week now and the fruit haven't gotten any bigger. Is this because the tree is getting over the initial shock of being transplanted? Is there anything I can do to improve the fruit production?

Thanks for your time and I really look forward to learning more about Figs and growing other varieties.

I also attached a photo of my new tree.

Welcome to the forum,
You've come to the right place for questions and answers.

But the first thing I'd like to tell you is that's not a Brown Turkey fig.
Looks more like a Negronne/VBD. Which to most ( say 95% of us ) it's better fig the the B/T.

Once the fruit get to a certain size they stop growing till about a week or so before harvest. That's when they start to swell, grow, droop and soften.
You'll know when the time come but that won't be till about late August or September. Or unless they are brebas and that will happen in about a month or so.

If you have an attached garage then you can cover them but not to an extreme.

Others with more knowledge will weigh in as well.

Congrats on your FIRST fig tree. LOL

Rafed,

Thanks for the reply. I have always been interested in growing trees in containers. In the above attached photo, on the bottom right hand corner is my Date palm that I started from a pit. Behind my fig, is a Cherry tree that I have been growing in that larger cement pot. So naturally, I was drawn into growing figs.

I do not have a garage, so I am planning to put them in my basement right next to a larger glass sliding door. Will the fig go dormant? And if it does, that means it wont need any sun light right? Attached are some more pictures of the fruit and the new leaf growth. Please share your thoughts and opinions guys, I really want my tree to thrive!

NOTE: Please excuse the blurry pics, I had to take them on my iPhone. Once I get a new SD card I'll be able to take better quality pictures. Also, everything is wet because it rain heavily today :). The last two pics are of my Date palm and my cherry tree. Just though I'd throw  them in for fun. I love gardening!!!

Also whats breba mean? lol please excuse my ignorance.

Andre welcome.
breba is the first crop of figs on last seasons wood, here in chicago they fall off due to the cold springs, not to worry though as the main crop taste much better. Many fig plants get 2 crops , first crop is breba followed by main crop.
On the other forum your message has an error and does not show up.

Martin,

Thanks for the reply, yeah I know thats why I decided to join this forum. thats for the info, I'll be in Shanghai until mid aug, so I hope I can taste some of the fruit. What part of Chicago are you in?

Andre, im on south side not in County of cook anymore in will c.

Good to hear there are fellow enthusiasts who are a part of the forum. I live way north of you in Skokie.

Andre,

The Outback Steakhouse in Skokie used to be my hangout.

They even placed a Boomerang in my name right above the bar. Been several years since I've been there.

lol, no way. I've been there a few times. I'm assuming you used to live here?

Andre,

I used to work for a local company out of Detroit and I used to make two overnight trips to the Chicagoland area per week and I would plan my break time in that area.
The company used to pay for my motel expenses so I used to stay at the Days Inn.
