New Fig Tree + Questions

This morning I was doing my rounds, and I noticed my Moringa trees starting to come to life and then I saw it!  A baby fig tree!!

UnknownFig1.jpg

Next to each Moringa, last August/Sept I placed 5 fig cuttings sent to me by a member horizontally into a trench and marked them with a stick.  I believe they were either Portugese, Spanish or Italian fig cuttings, but I have lost the member's name and the name of the variety.  If you sent me these cuttings, I would love to know what kind they are and know which of you sent them.  There were about 10 cuttings.  Those in the house, didn't make it.  After the winter here, I almost forgot I had planted half outside.   This is the first to show it's head, and others may follow.  Only time will tell if there are roots, but I'm sure there are.

Once this tree reaches a foot tall with several leaves, it will go into a 3 gallon pot for the year.  It is already acclimated to the sun and I expect it to do well.  Rooting a cutting this way, often produces several trees from each node buried underground.  Roots go down, leaves go up, and when the time comes I can just cut the cutting apart.

We got so busy with this move, I neglected to put any ID on this fig.  I should have taken the time, and I know it, but if you sent them, please let me know and I will put a proper ID on the fig this time!

Thanks so much whoever you are!

That is awesome to see! I'm happy for you Suzi even though you don't remember what it is :)

NIIIIICE...

woohoo!

It's adorable, and it is getting dampness from the dripper on the Moringa Olieferra tree.  The Moringa will give it some partial shade once it grows, and they grow fast, but we harvest the leaves often for salads and veggies!

We had 4 inches of rain a week ago, and that may have been the kicker, combined with the sunny skies we are now having.

There is a leaf you can't see in the photo forming.  This is a happy day for me, but I wish with all my heart I knew the donor and the variety.

cool, i tried in our clay soil once. it's still thinking it... it's been 3 yr's x)

Pete, as you can see. our soil is decomposed granite AKA sand.  It drains well.  Clay, YIKES!

One time in another home, I dug a hole for a special rose.  OMG!  I hit red clay!!  Truly that stuff they make bricks from.  I'm thinking, well, I'm planting this rose in a pot.  So I did, and it is doing well.  Some things just have a will to live!

But you do need some place with easy soil to start figs outside.

There is one that I am desperate to grow.  Macarthurs Park unknown.  That Pink Do.  I have beautiful cuttings, and I will put half in Sphagnum, and half in trenches in ground.  I desperately want that fig to live!!

What a beautiful little surprise there Suzi. I hope you can figure out the Variety and who sent it to you.

Congratulations!  I hope a gopher doesn't get it!

Hi desertdanse,
The key now is to keep the area humid. Watering every two or three days.
When watering pay attention that the water doesn't hit the cutting - water on the side of it so that the water gets back over the cutting's place.
Good luck !

jdsfrance, it's next to a plant on a drip system, so it gets enough water.  I'm more worried about gophers, but it's in a spot where I haven't seen any.  It's kind of an isolated strip of dirt with concrete on one side, and a driveway on the other.  I don't think gophers have discovered it, but you never know..........

I went out and checked it this morning and another leaf is starting to grow.  Wish I knew if roots were down there.

Yup, that's good stuff! This is my second season rooting figs. Last fall I rooted some outdoors in the shade and had no problems at all. This spring I started them in side and have now put them all out side in there bins. This spring has been a real challenge for me. I think I will wait next time untill its plenty warm outside and start all of them outdoors. Seems so much eaiser.

The issue has been resolved!  I couldn't find it in my PMs because we had communicated by email.  Unusual, but that's what happened.

This morning I got an email from Bobby, and he asked how the Scott's Black was doing.  I was puzzled, but he assured me that he sent me Scott's Black as payment for the VDB I sent him some time ago.  I absolutely have all the communication in my email, but didn't think to look there.

Scott's Black!  Woo hoo!!

The little fig is just doing fine!
