New Fig Trees

I received some new babies today that I picked up from Bass. They arrived in great shape. A few Brooklyn Whites, RDB and Makedonia. I am so glad spring is finally here!

Congrats on the new fig babies and best of luck growing them. Very nice varieties you got there!

Chris,

Thank you. We are supposed to have a couple cold days this weekend. So, I will keep them in the garage. I planted a few larger Celeste trees in the backyard this week too. Hopefully, they will do well.

They should be fine. It shouldn't last long. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and if needed throw a sheet over them( the newly planted Celeste). I m planing to keep all the potted ones in the shed for a couple of days also. The inground Celeste,BMission, brunswick,LSU Purple, white Italian will have to fend for themselves .
Are your Celeste still dormant?

Good Luck with your new babies!! You got them from a very good grower! I raised RDB last year and it's an  excellent cultivar, YUMMY! : )

Congratulations on the new plants and spring!

Chris,

I have all the potted figs in the garage and will keep them in tonight and tomorrow night. The Celeste I recently planted in the ground are about 7 feet tall. They have small green buds on them. No leaves yet.

Frank,

Thank you. I have heard good things about RDB. I am also looking forward to the Brooklyn Whites. I have a Maltese Falcon on the way. Other than that, I think I went from zero to lots of varieties very quickly. I will focus on what I have this year. I would like Maltese Beauty and Col De Dame Blanc, but those are the only ones I "covet" - at-the moment. ;)

I have Celeste in the ground now, also a tree which was sold as a brown turkey, but I think may be a Celeste and my first fig tree, a Peter's Honey. I have a Greek Fig tree and an Adriatic JH that I will put in the ground in a few weeks after the last threat of frost.

That should keep me busy for awhile.

I'd like to wish you success with your new trees too!  It's easy for the varieties to get out of hand for sure.  It takes a strong back and some determination for you guys where winter actually happens.  It takes some acreage and pruning shears for me.  Everything eventually goes is in ground.  I'm picking up 2 new varieties from Sue this weekend, but does she stop there?  Nope!  Leaving a few duplicates on the front porch for me to go through and take my pick.  Sigh.  I am determined not to take one, but .... it's a big temptation, and it's a wine tasting event.  I hope I meet her at the event, but the wine may affect my determination to resist all but the two........

Suzi

Suzi,

Thank you. I have a friend in the Atlanta area, and we exchange cuttings, too. So, I will still have a couple other varieties to experiment with. I give some Trees to friends and family. I think ultimately I will select a few of the best tasting and higher yields, and stick with them. Then again, I may be fooling myself. Your place sounds beautiful. Our house is on an acre, so some room, but not enough!

Good Luck!  RDB was definitely my best producer last year.It was also the most delicious. It is such a great plant to have. Do not have the other 2 but have heard good things. I do wonder about the Brooklyn's' hardiness.  I am sure it is100% however for you, as you are in a nice zone.

Regards.

Jerry,

Thank you. I will post some pics once they start taking off.
