New figgie

Very nice camera!
That fly looks like the bees around where I am.  You must have to carry a giant fly swatter.

Nahhh, I generally get along with the wildlife around here, with the exception of squirrels and yellow jackets. Too destructive, annoying, and aggressive. I even like to chill and watch paper wasps drinking at puddles in the summer.

Welcome Katie! Great story, love the pics, the cutting looks like it's trying to pop some roots ,the fly pic is very informative .i didn't know they have nose hair lol !!!
I and mrs K started growing our fig trees for the same reason as You! When the weather gets nice and warm we walk out to the porch coffee(or wine oh and some soft cheese wouldn't hurt) in hand, close our eyes and love the fact that it smells like we're somewhere in the Mediteranian! The fruit is only a huge bonus! Happy figging and best of luck with your "stick"

Thanks, Chris. :-)

The stick is indeed starting to push roots already. I am impressed! The cracks are getting bigger, and there is definitely swelling all around, along the cut edge under the bark. I can see a little bit of callus forming under one of the cracks. Roots very soon. If only my Nepenthes would act so fast. I am going to have a lot of fun with this little guy.

Welcome, Katie,
Figs, nepenthes, and sarracenia.  Haha!  You sound like me!!  That fly would make a swell dinner for the nepenthes...
Your stick?  Yep, roots.

Sarracenia ROCK, and are pretty easy to care for.

The fly would have been coaxed into a pitcher, but I don't have the heart to off a flower fly. Good bee mimics, and decent pollinators. The larvae eat decaying aquatic organic matter, keeping ponds and other still water less smelly. I had them in my pond aquarium way back when I lived in a house.

I'm a hugh fan of nepenthe, I used to have two different ones but I let a school science glass keep one for a few months and it never recovered...

Welcome Katie, so glad you joined us here, you know , Figs are really an Addiction! Hope you get addicted like the rest of us....; )

You know, Gloria, it's never too late to fill that empty spot on your Nepenthes shelf. ;)

Thanks, Frank. I wish I could grow as many figs as I had room, but this one will tax me. Some day....

Hey again! Get a headstart growing them in pots, maybe a couple of dwarf like varieties. You can even grow them as bonsai.you can find a few interesting videos on YouTube !
Just an idea!

Welcome Katie, you've got a great voice; are you a writer by any chance?  Careful around here... fig addiction is a contagious disease!

zone5figger, thanks! I could have been, but I never got the itch to write. I am happy writing as much or as little as I like, usually in the casual atmosphere if a forum or occasionally a newsletter. I do have a blog, but it's hardly ever updated. I should do that soon, shouldn't I? Lately the energy has been channeled into writing boooooring documents for a juniors program. Yawn.

I have an update. I have ROOOOTS! Three little white rootlets have emerged. I can't wait until the roots are long enough to pot up.
