Here is your opportunity to play. Not all of the cross links are reconfigured, yet, but the indexes should all work. Experimenting with a new picture/thumbnail approach, and hope to have a trial version done in a couple of days. Feedback is always good to have.

Jon, That looks great!  It loads much faster, too, with just each letter coming up.
I can't even imagine how much work you've put into this - thank you.

jon,

very nice!  good colors, large print, good format, easy on the eyes.  wow!

i know you aren't done but i was surprised nonetheless when i went to the L group and clicked on LSU Purple only to have it put the description in the left column as well as the large right column.  same thing happened when i went to the Q group and clicked on one.  and in the V section, i got a 'not available page' or something like that.  i assume all this is just because it is not finished, but thought i would let you know anyway in case you were looking for as yet unidentified bugs in the works.

it loads faster for me as well, even on my dial-up.

i usually get impatient waiting for the photos to come up and when i click on one, it usually stops loading the rest and i have to click on each individual box.  sometimes it just stops loading the photos after a few minutes and i still have to click on each box.  i don't know much about computers, just enough to ask silly questions.  but, i just assume this problem is mainly because of my dial-up situation.

we hope you reap great satisfaction from a job well done on the site.

To my favorite shepherdess,

I will check the problems out. Eventually, I am going to ask everyone to take one letter of the alphabet and test all the links for that letter, so we can debug all of this. But I have to get all the links changed to the new format, first.

For now, I have changed the pix for Black Mission and Blue Giant to separate pages. When all of the varieties are done, the main pages will load much faster, and you will only have to wait to load the pix you want. Give it a try.

Also, I have to say, that I have been taking a FREE class, one night a week for about 4 months learning a program called Dreamweaver, to make all of this possible. I am learning a lot, but more importantly, the fellow teaching the class has taken a real interest in this project and has given me untold amounts of personal time both with Dreamweaver, and with Photoshop, which have really accelerated the progress of this project. I am really thankful for all of his help.

Jon, when you are ready, I will do the  'G ' (for gorgi), alphabet part of the task ...

George (NJ).
P.S. I personally think that it may be more beneficial if more 2xEyes do look
at it; different problems/improvements  are more likely to be observed...
(i..e. I think  it may better for 3 people looking at each of any 3 different letters,
rather than one person looking at ALL the same 3 letters).
Also, it may be more beneficial to testers/fixer-upper, if error reporting is done in
stages, assuming  there may be some  COMMON  errors that can be fixed
globally.

P.S.S.... the following list will be edited/ updated by the moderator himself
(aka Jon), as required. If you want to volunteer, just cut and paste and write your
username next to any available letter(s)  you wish to test in a NEW post...

It looks good. Most probably you may be planning to put some pointers to jump back and forth to/from FIG4FUN etc like you have on top of FIG4FUN home page.

Also, it may be a good idea to suggest to the browsers of the ‘Varietal Site’ (at least the FIG4FUNers) to let you know (if they want to be helpful) to inform you of the changes in URLs of referred websites that they accidentally come across. Just like you are revamping the ‘Varietal Site’, your references also do the same periodically to make improvements. Just today when I clicked on reference (073) in relation to “White” and “BIFARA” figs, it could not access the intended site. I knew that Grimo Nut Nursery has revamped the site recently. So reference (073) URL need to be changed from http://www.grimonut.com/section5.htm#fig   to   the new http://www.grimonut.com/catalog.php?catID=71 . It will be difficult for you to attend to such inputs right away but you can create a repository for such input to be worked later.

Also, you are correct that your “ ‘BIFARA NOT” sold to you as BIFARA is not BIFARA. My BIFARA that I bought last summer from Grimo meets Grimo’s description of colour and size. I cannot describe the taste because the only fig that ripened out of seven on the whip last year I gave it to my wife but to her every fig tastes good. I hope it branches out a bit next summer  instead of staying a whip like it stayed the whole last summer. You may use the picture if you wish because it came from Grimo’s Bifara fig tree.

The only thing confusing for those who may be surfing JUST4FUN is to see figs with green, yellow and purplish coloured figs under the same fig name. I noticed a number of these but that may be the way it is.

Ottawan,

The obsolete-link-thing is the downside of "footnoting" everything - but I want people to be able to access the original sources. Hopefully, most people, like you, can figure them out and get where they are supposed to go. On my banana site, webebananas.com, 60% or more of the links simply don't exist anymore. Information I collected over the past few years is gone, except for the portions I kept, originally for my own information.

I do appreciate the heads up. That is something a really appreciate about the "figgies" - there is a camaraderie and sense of community.

Hi Gorgi,

I did read Jon's post.  It says, "Eventually, I am going to ask everyone to take one letter of the alphabet and test all the links for that letter, so we can debug all of this. But I have to get all the links changed to the new format, first."

He writes "eventually" he will ask for help, "but" he has to get the links changed first.

So, when he is ready, I will help.

Hi Jon,

I will do R, S, T, and V:

As a side note, I've used Dreamweaver and Photoshop (Fireworks, Illustrator, etc.) for years in my 'other' job as web editor. If you need any help let me know. I just upgraded to Adobe CS3 ($$$$ ouch!).

One hint, use the library fiunction (I use them for all my footers, headers, etc.) and CSS if at all possible. It will make updating easier. If you need help, I'm not that far away.

OK, time for help.

I think I have all of the inter-site links updated, and ready for testing.

Thanx, Sue, both for doing some editing, and for the offer with Adobe. I will definitely keep you in mind. For now, the class instructor has been sooo helpful, so I am going to continue to use that resource while I have it available.

Testing the 'edit' thread feature (see post #7), from another (logged-out) computer...

I saw a yellow 'left-most'  marker, indicating some NEW (unread) post was added.

Editing this SAME post again and checking the other computer...

No 'yellow' marker indicating that 'something' has changed! But  re-viewing  the
same thread, I was able to see the changes (editing).

Wait a minute! Something  else is happening, probably it trying to be fixed, the
other computer  shows 'blue'  (from black)  thread  headers (permanently)
when I click on any of them edited or not....

Here's a sample of what gorgi did for "G" which helped clean up a lot of issues. Way top se the standard, gorgi.

F4F_G_errors (gorgi)

Please check:
The important things:
1) Each Index name to see that the "info" pane advance to that variety.
GRAY BIFERE (does not advance)

2) Each synonym link "jumps" to the right place, and loads the correct matching index.
All (re)loaded the correct index and info page, but maybe due to initial page loading,
most jumped to the wrong place. Whenever there was a cross-link back, I was able
to go to the original page. When there was no cross-link back I had a big problem
(e.g., GILLETTE SYN: ST. JOHN is not cross-linked back). I used the 'go back one page'
button on the browser, which only changed the info page, and not the index
(a definite mismatch), which needed another back click to correct.

3) Varieties in the "info" pane which do not have a listing in the "index" pane
GAZIR, (GOLDEN CELESTE - SEE LSU GOLDEN CELESTE), GOUTTE D'OR, GYPSY (missing)

4) Varieties which are mis-alphabetized (I find one now and then).
GROSSALE

The hard and tedious things:
5) Each footnote (they look like this (910), though the numbers vary) to see if it works,
or of the link is dead or changed.
Not Found: GALBUN(001a), GENOA (057), GOURANDI (021), GRAY MIDSUMMER'S DAY (046),
           GREEN ISCHIA (030) (060) (016)
Timed out: GENOA (023)
Not hyper: GREEN ISCHIA (941), GIANT AMBER (044 w/leaf), GULBUN (941 w/leaf)
Other:
GULBUN, GYPSY (941) (Leaps into gAlbun, top of page)
GREEN GERMAN 1920 (902) (THROWS YOU OUT TO: cmdrzog's Member Page)
GREEN ISCHIA      (920) (THROWS YOU OUT TO: han205's Member Page)
GYPSY             (914) (THROWS YOU OUT TO: pokeberry's Member Page)
GARNSEY WHITE SEEDLESS ?(076)? http://www.sperlingnursery.com/fruit_fig.htm

6) If thumbnails are mis-sized (they should all be the same height) or missing.
All are of same height; but I see a lot of variation in the width (OK with me).

7) If all thumbnails link a full-sized picture (rather than a thumbnail, or nothing).
GREEN GERMAN 1920/GREEN ITALIAN 1906 both show leaf pic 'GRN GERMANY', maybe intended so?
GYPSY first 2 pics are rather small.

8) Anything else which seems wrong.
< GROSSE VERTE (has some extra characteres in front)
GRAYOFTARASCON on info page should be GRAY OF TARASCON (with spaces)
GRAY MIDSUMMER'S DAY = GREY OF MIDSUMMER DAY? (a gray/grey thing...)

Only took about 45 minutes to fix all these things, when I knew what I was looking for. Any footnote numbers "(014)", for example, which are on gorgi's list will have the same problems on all the pages, and I will make the appropriate changes when I do each alphabetical page. Most of the links that have issues have changed when a site was remodeled, buit some, sadly are dead and gone.

Hello Everyone,

I have checked A through D but wasn't able to complete all the testing.  I couldn't check all the thumbnails to see if they linked to a full-sized photo, or the footnotes to see if the link was good.  If the link was broken my Internet Explorer, and ocassionally my laptop would lock up.

Can anyone check the photos and footnotes for A through D?

Thanks.

Chills,
The way I did it, was to 'cut and paste'  to a new  'notepad'  MS file
(an old  plain & simple text file  format) the 8 guidelines pointed to by Jon in post # 7.
Under each item, I edited the same file to reflect my findings (errors), and then
emailed Jon  the results, see post #20, as an attachment (since the file is sooo
small in size, it can also be cut/pasted  directly as part of your email), aka, no
attachment needed. Then Jon does the rest....

As I said before, the more eyes that look at this will be more beneficial to us all.

Regards,
George (NJ).

Jon,

I just sent you a 4-page list of updates for the letter R. Some of what I sent you were general formatting issues that I'd like to see done for each letter.

For instance, I'd like to see paragraph breaks between each variety. I'd like to see the images set up in a table to help with alignment. Also I would like to have similar images together; leaves, eye of fruit, side views, opened fruits for easier comparison. I would like to see paragraph breaks within the descriptions if more than one footnote is referenced for easier reading. There are a few more in the email I sent. :-)

On to "S".

Fignut,

It is not you, there seemed to have been a few short down periods in the last couple of days. Finding a better website host is on the list of things to do. The one I am using, 1 and 1 is very highly rated, but have had 3-4% downtime on my site the last two years (despite their supposed 99.97% uptime rating). If it is down, it is NOT my doing, but the site host.

Sue.

Don't disagree with many of your requests, if any, but everything takes time. I am still looking for someone rich to adopt me, so that I can devote full time to figs and other fruit/garden issues (the whole need-to-work-to-eat thing is still getting in the way). I experimented with two varieties in the "B" section, making thumbnail galleries, and moving the thumbnails off the main page, for better organization and faster loading. Not sure they are quite what I want, yet. You can check them out (Black Mission and one other)

Just another labor intensive thought:

Create individual pages for each variety (I know, a lot of work but you can cut and paste!). Link each of these new pages to their name in the left frame info pane and target="right" so it will show up in the right frame when the name is clicked on.

Sorry, I'm in your boat too...gotta work to eat!

Chills, I received your e-mail, and have already added the changes. Thanx!! That covers I-K.

Darcy, I have all of your changes entered and uploaded. Thanx. That covers the important aspects of A-D.

Gorgi has done G and H, and those changes have been entered. He has also done F, but I didn't get than far. Thanx, gorgi.

I have e-mails from others, and will work on those when I get a chance.

Everyone has been great. I know this is a tedious and time consuming task, but your help will allow me to move on to other things in a much more timely manner. That excites me!!

Many of the suggestions that have been made are good ideas, and when there is time many of them will get implemented.

There are a variety of reasons why some the synonyms are not linked both ways. Some haven't been done for lack of time. In some cases, one source will suggest a different name as a "synonym", but no sources list the primary variety as a synonym for the "synonym". I chose not to link in the direction that is not supported by a source. Some synonyms are listed for a variety in the sources, but the synonyms have no other references in the literature, so, in many cases, have not been given a separate entry. This is all part of the horrendous mess that fig names are in.

Sue,

I finished "R" today. Thanx. I have received "S" but didn't get that far. Really nice work.

Gorgi, I also have "F" done. Thanx.
Some of you are professional quality editors.

I updated all the known outdated links today, for A-Z though there are some that are dead, dead, dead, with no forwarding address: 021, 046, 049, 060, 065, and 084.

The smaller fig leaf pix, which is "iconic" is a place holder for varieties which have no available pictures.

Comments about formatting and layout have all been read and taken to heart. Many I agree with. After I get general functionality sorted out, and this round of editing, I will revisit the design and layout issues. One of the criteria commented on was spacing. I agree that things are a bit run-together at this stage. I originally opted for more info on-screen (compactness) coupled with a little large typeface, which led to the current layout. When everything gets balanced out, I am inclined to make things a little less compact.

Jon,
I just forwarded my previous email for the letter "U" to your cox.net address.  Let me know if you don't get it.

Jon,
Not to pick but most of my suggested changes to the "S" fig page have not been done. The info pane now looks correct but most of the changes needed on the right pane have not been corrected (spelling errors, thumbnails too small, bad links, etc). You might want to go back and double check the page. Maybe the corrected page just didn't get uploaded to the server?
