New Figs 4 Fun Varietal site almost ready

Sue, I have you on ignore. Not really. You have been very thorough. Link no's 021, 046, 060, 065, 084 are dead. I am going to see if I can track any of them down, but not hopeful.

There are three groups of small thumbnails, and I am going to fix them all at the same time, but have made a note of them. That is a Photoshop issue.

For now, jumping from one synonym to another does not let the "back" function work properly - I think because of the java script that is required to change two frames at the same time. Don't yet know if there is a fix for that.

Some of the spelling and grammar is the way it is because the original sources were that way, and I haven't always chosen to fix them. Generally if I have changed something I put it in [] braces, so that it is clear that I have edited it.

Beyond that, if I am being brain dead (which I am trained to be, when necessary), send me some specifics and I will recheck them.

I did the "U".  And I saw Darcy's note about doing a couple more. And I did get W-Z today, as well.

I've finished letters P and Q except for the footnotes.  I will need help again.  Any takers?

I have entered and uploaded "U", thanx to Sue, and "W"-"Z" thanx to Cecil.

I corrected the indexes for L and M, but still need someone to check everything else.

Hey, WE're almost there!!!

Links 049 and 049a will be corrected when I get the correct URLs from USDA/UC Davis.

Link 941 is for a source which does not have an interent presence.

On a different note, I have six new bags of cuttings, collected at CRFG scion exchanges this week, starting their rooting process. Yea!!

Please check:

The important things:
1) Each Index name to see that the "info" pane advance to that variety.
2) Each synonym link "jumps" to the right place, and loads the correct matching index.
3) Varieties in the "info" pane which do not have a listing in the "index" pane
4) Varieties which are mis-alphabetized (I find one now and then).

The hard and tedious things:
5) Each footnote (they look like this (910), though the numbers vary) to see if it works, or of the link is dead or changed.
6) If thumbnails are mis-sized (they should all be the same height) or missing.
7) If all thumbnails link a full-sized picture (rather than a thumbnail, or nothing).
8) Anything else which seems wrong.

Jon,
I've sent you updates for "T" and "V" today.

One thing I didn't mention is that you need a "HOME" button at the end of every page so we can get back to your front page (http://www.figs4fun.com) if needed.

I usually put something like this in a "Library" and add it as a footer for easy updating:

 |HOME|VARIETALS|LINKS|FORUM| etc.

Sue

I agree with svanessa that some home/back 'button(s)' may be very desirable.
I once raised that issue and the response I got was that is what  'bookmarks' are
supposed to do...
George (NJ).

Jon,

Just sent you another pass of updates to the letter "S" that were missed the first time around and a "new" typo.

Sue

OK, Sue, I'm braindead, and I can't type. Other than that, I did pretty good ;-)))

OK, I believe that I have corrrected and uploaded everything that has been sent to me.

I verified that USDA has removed all of their pictures from their site.
006 thumbnails have been resized. Still need to do 046, 049, 051, 907

Jon, Did you get the corrections for Section A?  I sent them the 24th to the pitangadiego at yahoo address.
Section B is almost done - hopefully tomorrow.

fignut, that is a negative. Use encantofarms at cox dot net Thanx.

Jon,

Did you get P and Q?

Darcy

Yes, and they have been uploaded to the server.

Jon, I sent Section B out this afternoon.

fignut,  Thanx for the hard work on A and B, and a sharp eye. They have been corrected and uploaded. There are quite a few dead links.

Jon,

I sent out L yesterday.

Got it, Scott. Thanx.

Jon,
It looks like the letter 'M' still needs to be done? If no one is working on it, I will. Let me know.
Sue

Sooo,
What  is missing to complete this good thing?
George (NJ)..

A long look at M, for links, and the "hard stuff" - I looked at the index already. Then, checking links for C and D. Doing that portion crashed Darcy's computer.

I believe everything else is done and enter red, and uploaded. Then I hope to work on taking pix off the main pages, which will help loading times, and eliminate the "scrolling" when you jump to a particular variety (there is a long and tedious way to do this in HTML, but don't want to go there).

Then I want to work on getting Ken Love's pix posted (they are all prepared), a "Links" page with the hundreds of links I have collected, adding accession data from USDA/UC Davis, Condit's material by variety...

I have also started turning all the sources into PDF files, so that no additional info will be lost to dead links. And then I can upload them and link to them.

I still need to be adopted by a nice rich person, so I can devote full time to gardening stuff. ;-))

I'll tackel M today. It's so boring at work lately, I have plenty of time...
Sue

Jon, I'm working on C.

Jon,
I just sent you the letter "M". I'll finish "D".
Sue

M is entered and uploaded.

I finally discovered the problem with the small thumbnails. They referenced old files on another server, from when this site was literally hours old, and the old URLs had survived all these years un-noticed.

When C and D are done, I think we will be done with this phase. Many, many thanx to several people who have really worked hard on editing all of this material.

I have started preparing the USDA accession material.

I am still experimenting with the pix page format. I don't think I have found the magic bullet yet.

I would also like to add a note of thanks to all of you that have helped Jon with this tremendous upgrade. Using my pokey little dial-up from the edge of civilization here abouts, I could never before load Figs 4 Fun without many time outs. And now, Ahhhhhh lookie there.
Thank you,
Brian

Hi Jon,

I just sent you updates for"D". Have fun! ;-)

Sue
