New Greenhouse finished just in time!

Good day, well this year our cold weather front came 2 weeks earlier than past years! Normally, we would have 25 degree weather around the first week of November. Not this year! This year the front came early and my new GH was complete. The base frame was up but not the cover. We are suppose to get temps down to 31 Monday and Tuesday morning. That's too cold for my citrus trees. I have 2 Meyer Lemons, 2 Verigated Kumquats, 2 other kumquats, 1 Satsuma Owari, and a few others. My lemons are ripening and the others have fruit on. So, it was time to start moving them inside.

Right now, I have all my citrus inside my garage. They will go in my GH once I get a feel for how to control the nightly and daytime temps. Right now, it's 60 degrees outside, 60 inside my garge with the door open and 75 inside my new GH. Here are a few pictures taken moments ago.

enjoy,

Congrats on this year's new addition!

As for next year, I say encapsulate your entire property, house and all, in one big greenhouse :)

Good good good luck growing. In it.

James,
I have been thinking of covering all of my container trees. But the wife said no.

Looks good Dennis!
What is the floor area of the greenhouse, and what is the height? (hard to tell scale from the photos)

The center is 9 feet tall. The floor will be 2 inch concrete pavers. Half inside is paved. I've got to add more gravel and dirt on some low spots. I've got a few trees inside now but it's no where close to being full. We still have 70 degree days and low 40s at night. I built a barrel stove put currently I have a small thermostatically controlled heater set to come on at 40 degrees. Right now, its 9PM and 40 degrees outside. Inside the GH it's 49 degrees. I like that!

Congratulations on the first of many  :)  The wife will get used to them.

Thanks Bob.  She use to complain about my trees.  She don't anymore.  Today, I just get, "the look"!
She use to complain until I got my first Meyer Lemon trees 2 years ago.  She thought the large yellow balls were fake until I picked one in Decemeber 2 years ago.  Now she can't wait until the lemons ripen!  But the Verigated Kumquats are the sweetest kumquats I've ever eaten. They are my favorite!

Looks like our cold front is over....for now.  Welcome to life living in the Carolinas!  This is when we begin to have just a taste of winter.  Now, we have highs in the mid to late 70s and lows back down to 50s.  Now, I have time to throw down some gravel and tweak the green house.  I'm kinda a perfectionist when it comes to building.

Looks great, I am thinking of setting up a green house next year. I am assuming you bought a kit, and it may be too early but can you give any feedback about the model type. I am also considering building my own, but the convenience factor is very tempting.

Looks great!  Hope it works out well for you!

Becky, hi, yes, it is a kit.  It's Shelter's Logic 12x20 green house.  I got it from Northern Tool this Spring.  It is made of steel frames and very heavy duty fibered plastic.  There are 2 vents at both ends that zipper open and close.  Plus there are 2 wide opening on both ends.  I paid $599 for it with a coupon and free shipping.  The kit comes with 2 foot long earth anchors.  I bought an extra set of anchors and added one for each post all the way around the GH.  The kit only comes with 6.  The post are anchored deep in the ground and the cover is anchored to the post using steel ratchet tie downs.

Some folks claim the unit isn't sturdy and moves in heavy wind.  Mine does not move.  If you anchor it correctly and tie down every post it will not move.  I like the optional zipper vents however, I purchased 2 more vents that open and close based on temperature.  I need to install these this weekend because I'm getting tired of going outside every morning and manually opening up the vents.

Cold weather is coming, so I had to make the front and back more secure. I added 3/4 inch plywood to the front and back. I added pressure treated 2x2 stakes driven in the soil and secured with 1-1/2" screws all around. The top is secured with 175lb zip ties spaced 12 inches apart. I cut the original greenhouse front and secured it with 2x3 pine. The front can roll up to allow me to open the screen door or let more air inside. The top can also unzip to only allow a little bit of air to flow. The rear has 2 temp sensor air vents. If the inside temp reaches 70 degree, the vent will open automatically.

Getting ready to add my barrel stove. Currently heating with a small keresone heater. Here are a few pics. Enjoy!
