Hi, folks,
I'm new to the forum so I'm introducing myself here. I've been reading the forum for a while and found a lot of interesting information. I've loved figs since I was a little kid. My grandfather had Brown Turkey trees in his back yard; when they were ripe we would pick and eat as many as we could, and they were great. I recently bought a house in East Central Texas and I'm looking forward to planting a few fig trees. I have found that, as much as I liked Brown Turkey figs when I was a kid, I prefer the taste of other figs.
I travel to Barcelona, Spain about twice a year on business. I'm often there from June to July. In the markets there, they had brebas the size of my fist labeled only "Brevas Colar" which I believe are the variety Colar d'Albatera based on the pictures and discussions I've seen on the forum. They are very tasty and very big, and somehow the farmers know precisely when to pick them so that every breba I get is perfectly ripe. This past July when I returned from Spain I think I must have gained 10 pounds just from the figs. My local grocery in Texas stocks some figs from California. They are good, especially the early Black Mission figs, but they are nothing like those Colar brebas. I would love to plant a Colar tree in my backyard if I could find a cutting.
For now, I have a few seedlings growing from caprified grocery store figs as well as some cuttings rooting from a couple of unknown fig trees from Spain. We'll see what, if anything, comes from that.
If anyone would be willing to part with a Colar d'Albatera/Abicou/Aubacó cutting or two, I'd be eternally grateful :-)
I'm looking forward to reading more about figs here :-)
