Hello all, I,m a new member from Phoenix, Az.  I recently recieved a small Ronde De Bordeaux from a member of this forum.  This is my first fig tree, so I'm looking for some care advise. The plant currently has three leaves and is about 10" tall in a one gallon pot.  I read that the RdB is an excellent tasting fig that grows well in my area.  Which fig trees would you recommend for my area?

Welcome!  Hey!  Ronde de Bordeaux is a cold weather fig.  Chill!  It will be a good one for you, as long as you don't get too anal about it.  Figs are delicious, and the Lady Ronde is fabulous.  Good score!

Tell us about your growing conditions and the culture you plan on giving your new fig.   Us Fig Yentas must have all the sordid details so that we could mind your business for you, and "offer" suggestions to help you along with raising that new child.

Seriously, let us know your climate zone, will you grow in ground, or will you containerize?  I don't think that where you live (Arizona) will be any problems, and there are many growers on this forum who live in Arizona.  (I'd kill for some of your sun and heat).

Full sun, heat, chalky soils with perfect drainage, scarce food, not too much nitrogen, give tree just enough water, and you're good to go.  However, your small tree will need some attention, not much, but some.  Nurturing details will follow.

Welcome to the forum perhaps the member that gave you the plant can also answer some of your questions.
Other than that Ronde grows well taste great and in containers will have to be root pruned every so many years
and fed fertilizer of your choice as well along with limb pruning and pinching as needed.

Welcome. Your first big choice is to choose in between in ground or in pot.
In ground is much more easy - especially to manage water, but you'll have to keep an eye on critters especially rodents.
I decided to make a mix, and I burrow an 80l plastic trashcan without its bottom and plant in ground in that container ... That test is still ongoing but so far so good,
and especially the "underground" rodents are for now not annoying my trees .

How is your climat- zone? Cold ?

Welcome to the wild world of figs, but be careful you don't fall down the rabbit hole. Some of us are kind of crazy around here.

Ronde de Bordeaux, I just started 3 cuttings this winter. I am really hoping at least one of them makes as I too have heard great things about the round lady of Bordeaux.

Welcome!  You probably get some cold nights.  Don't let it be exposed to temps below 50 or so when it's trying to grow.  When it hardens off and goes dormant in the late fall it can tolerate temps down to freezing when young, 25 degrees later, even less if it goes in ground and you have some mulch around the lower several inches.

I plan on growing in a pot for the next month or two, then she'll be going in the ground. 
I love the taste of fresh figs and can't wait to grow some for myself.

Your fig should do well there in the Valley of the Sun!  Be careful not to let the roots get baked in the pot though.

welcome. RdB should be a nice fig for you. if it's hot and dry there almost any fig will do well. depending on the how long your season is, some late ones might have an issue. but if the season is long, hot and dry... figs will love it. 

Just some thoughts.....ditto post #18....keep the small tree that you planted into a one-gallon pot, cool, or roots can cook in blazing sun very quickly.  Maybe sink the one-gallon pot into a deep pile of mulch to keep it cool.  I grow in containers, and trees can, and do, get heat-stressed when the root zone cooks.  Cool roots, sunny tops.

Good idea Frank. 
I re-poted into a three gallon pot today to keep it cool.  She looks good and seems to like the extra space.

I've been learning quite a bit reading through the forum and enjoy seeing all the variation out there.

The three types that I'm most interested in growing based on their descriptions are:

LSU Purple
Violette de Bordeaux
Marseilles VS Black

Do you all think these are good selections for my area and "experience" level with figs?

I planted at Panache Tiger Fig 2 years ago in the ground and am now seeing good growth. We should get the AZ guys together and have a fig tour when the crops are ripe.
