I just joined this place was recommended by someone on a tomato forum I am one...
I am semi retired I have a very small nursery that I do cuttings of shrubs to sell... We have 6 1/2 acres here in SW MO Ozarks.....
how I got here well on the tomato forum I asked if anyone had fig trees that grow in zone 5-6 ..
.
That could take some cuttings from it.... I can pay for them.
my spouse is from Chicago and she as a child remembers these in her yard... I want some cuttings to root so she can have one here at our place.... I want it for a Christmas gift to her... she misses home so I want to bring a piece of her childhood and home here to the Ozarks..... Thanks... (she has to put up with me after all)
As for knowing anything about figs well that would be none LOL
Since I root shrubs I figured that figs would not be hard to do.

Welcome, Danny. You should have no problem getting cuttings, the pruning season is close for many members. Here in California, it won't be until January. Best of luck.

Look for Hardy Chicago.  It will survive there and give your wife a home namesake. Welcome!

Hi frd
Is it possible to root tomatoes?

Thanks

Yes tomatoes are easy take some cuttings you can dip them in rooting powder to help them root faster stick them in moist sand use sand for sandbox or cemdnt not morter sand keep them in shade and water then just to keep the sand moist

Hardy Chicago does seem appropriate for a lady missing Chicago. MBVS, RDB, Brooklyn White, Sal's EL are some other options.

I've found that tomatoes root well just in a cup of water by the window too. No need to even bother changing the water, just add more as it evaporates.

Welcome to the forum DLT. Check your pm.

Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
In Zone5/6, you should perhaps consider growing the fig trees in pots. And protecting them in a garage for the winter.
There is a lot of reading on the forum, especially search for word SIPS, and pots .
Going through cuttings takes a bit of time. I would recommend to lurk at nurseries (locally and www ) to see what you can find.
You could buy a small tree for 15$/20$, and she would fruit sooner probably.
At the same time, you could start other cuttings for a long term plan.
I'm sure your Madame wants some ten fig trees and not only one ( at this point, you can still pretend that you thought she would want so ) ...

For tomatoes, you can even ground layer them. Just let a branch touch ground and it will make roots.
The only drawback is that the new plant will fruit later... How do I know ... Damn vole ! One vole cut one of my tomato plants at the base. That plant was just so strong, that I just buried it deeper and it made its life into fruiting ... but later than the other undisturbed plants and that plant was not as strong afterwards.

Welcome to the forum! Check out this link from a previous post, it goes over cold hardy varieties.
