New in Arizona

Hi, I'm Melissa and I live in Arizona.  Jeannie introduced me to this forum and I'm glad she did. I'm fairly new to growing figs. Currently, I have an LSU Purple and a White Marsailles (neither of which have produced fruit for me yet...next Spring for sure).  My dad had a tree growing up and I never was very fond of it. I believe it's a brown of some sort. I'm hoping to find some with amazing flavor that are not the plain, boring fig of my memories from dad's tree (that he still has, but looks to be dying from something).

Anyway...looking forward to learning a lot.  I've already ordered a "newbie" pack of cuttings from Aaron. See...jumping right in.

I'm on the same boat as you! I'm hooked on how easy these trees are to grow here. I'm looking to get several cuttings here soon to start with.

Where are you located?

peoria, az

Opposite side of town.  I'm near the Scottsdale airport.

Welcome Melissa!

Welcome!  Try to keep it under 500 varieties for the first 3 months  :)

Welcome!  I wish I lived in your area!  Man just think of all the figs I could have!!!!  Beware!   Figs are addicting!!!  Again, welcome!

Melissa and raimeiken,

There is an AZRFG scion exchange on Jan 30th (see below). The scion exchange is being combined with this rose grafting event. I am sure people will be bringing a lot of fig cuttings (I will). You will be able to pick up likely a nice variety of cuttings for free!

January 30th, Saturday, 8:00am-Noon - Special event:  AZRFG/MEVRS Fruit & Rose DIY Tree Day (Scion Exchange, Grafting Workshop and Presentations) (Location: Mesa Community College, Navajo Room) More details coming soon at FruitRoseDIYDay.org

Is it for members only?

Nope. They said at the last meeting it would be open to the public.

Wow. Thanks for the info.  I'm going to mark my calendar now for that event.  It sounds like a fun event!

No problem!

Yay! This is going to get very serious very fast Melissa. Figs everywhere. It is clear to me in Phoenix we have LOTS of options. With my already serious obsession with veggie gardens and other fruit trees I might have 75 fig trees by next year ;)
I will definitely be at the scion exchange in January. I am also picking up 4 more fig trees I ordered from the AZRFG sale in January.
Anyone not a member of AZRFG the membership cost is as low as $25 and so worth it compared to what you save on just a few trees from them! I paid for the membership with the 4 fig trees I bought.

It starts with an innocent newbie pack.  Then...the abyss :0

Enjoy these simple times of moderation while they last.  Soon enough you'll go completely bonkers like the rest of us :)

You guys are funny.

Jeannine...we should go together.  Definitely thinking about joining AZRFG.  I should probably quit thinking and just do it (been thinking about it for a few years, haha).

So...what are the MUST HAVES? (or is that opening a can of worms, so to speak)

M

Welcome from California, Melissa. Must haves??? Now that's funny!

Hi Welcome!

Must haves? Don't I need them all?

I would say; VdB/ Vista, JH Adriatic, there are many more IMHO, but I doubt anyone here would argue the merit of these two proven figs.

With your long season you should be able to get figs from July through frost.
