Just wanted to give a hearty "Hello" to everyone.
What can I say?   I LOVE figs!!

I've never met a fig I didn't like....at least so far.

I live in central South Carolina, zone 8b, and in almost pure sand.  It is a challenge to
grow anything here.  The main problem is keeping water to my plants since it immediately
disappears upon hitting the ground.  The water company here LOVES me!

I look forward to being on this forum and learning all I can about my most favorite
fruit in this world.
Currently I have 4 Brown Turkey, one Chicago Hardy, and one Texas Everbearing fig trees.
I fear that my Texas Everbearing has not made it through the winter.
I look forward to getting a few cuttings to increase the range of varieties that can be grown
here in the deep South.

Figs Forever!!!!

Welcome to the forum Sandra

Figgy Do Dah Day to you!

Welcome to the forum. I just joined myself this month. The people on here are awesome and answer all my dumb questions without batting an eye.
Everyone seems to have a great time and welcomes all newcomers with open arms.

Hello Sandra,
Welcome to the forum community.

I don't have sandy soil, but have several years experience growing plants in raised beds. Attached is a PDF document with diagrams of Japanese Fig Espaliers, note the diagrams of the raised beds (12 inches high) which seem to be on sandy soil, due to the reference to nematodes. Creating raised beds with your local soil, composted material and mulch, may increase you water retention. Good Luck.

Sandra, glad to have you as a member of this Forum.

Welcome!  If you don't want to do raised beds you can add compost and peat moss to your planting area.  The texas everbearing is very similar to the brown turkey from what I've heard.  There are many varieties which are much better.  We have a lot of members in your region.  Snaglepus is from NC so your climate is similar but better.  Look at this post and this one.  These are just his favorites.  Once you try some of these you'll probably tear out your turkeys   :)

Gracious!  Such a warm and heartfelt welcome.  Thank you!

Thanks for the excellent suggestions and I will definitely check each one out.

Looks like Snaglpus will soon be my new best friend....:-))

I've already spent several hours looking over the photo galleries and reading lots of the
previous posts.
This is an excellent forum for the serious fig-lover!

Did I mention how much I love figs?  I still have about 4 lbs of dried figs from
last year.  I can't bear to lose one fig from off the tree.

If I love Brown Turkey so much.....and most everyone seems to think they are at the bottom
of the fig list.....then I'm looking forward to tasting the "good stuff"....LOL!
A real fig-lover's dream.

Welcome ..............

welcome aboard Sandra.
