Hello Norhayati   I'll be interested in learning about the fig cultivars you have, and any Malasian fig recipes.  I've been looking at the "figmalasia"  I saw some amazing figs you have.

Hi and Welcome!

Welcome to you!

Welcome, really curious how figs grow there (other than like weeds).

Thank you dear friends for welcoming me to the forums. Soni, Fig Malaysia do have a lot of varieties but most of them are imported ones from Spain, portugal, italy, japan etc. we do have local varieties but they are not ficus carica. They are f.racemosa, f.auriculata. We have a fig group here trying to graft the imported varieties to the local ones. Growing figs in malaysia is still very new. But nevertheless the imported varieties seem to grow pretty well here. You may say we are still at infancy stage. At the moment I have Black mission, red libya, green and purple jordan, calimyrna and long yellow. They are hardly 3 weeks old.

welcome to the forum Nurhayati!

Selamat datang(Welcome). Hope your "fig fever" lead to some yummie finds.

Your biggest challenge would likely be rain causing the figs to rupture & ruin their yummie taste.
Hence best to go with varieties with closed eye. I know some varieties has worked well in Malaysia like
Conadria, LSU Tiger, Osborne Prolific. If you can get LSU O'Rourke, it should do well. Anyway I am
sure many varieties like Hardy Chicago, RdB, VdB, JH Adriatic, Rosetta, LSU Purple etc can do very
well in Malaysia.

Hi Paully,
Terima kasih. Yes the biggest challenge is the rain. It will promote fungus . The last batch of cuttings were infected by molds despite all the preventions I took. So far my black mission, long yellow and red libya are growing well. I can't say the same of my cuttings. Paully, here in my Malaysia we have a fig group too. It is called Pokok Tin Malaysia. All the cuttings you mentioned are not readily available. If they are, they are expensive (even the common varieties). I have spent almost USD 200 on my last batch and I would be very happy if 30% of them survive. Thank you for your fig suggestion. I will try to buy those in the future.

Welcome to the forum loads of info on here. Glad to have you.

Good to see more folks from Malaysia getting into figs. Inspite of the rainy spells, there are many sunny hot days that will provide many smiles. I have come across many Msians & S'poreans that are wow by fresh fig taste.....awesome & all wants a tree. Hence if you can get your hands on close eye varieties or varieties that works well in Florida, Louisiana that are much similar in climate, it will be a good bonus.

Its a bummer to deal with molds. I killed all my cuttings in my 1st year as a newbie. You are making good progress compared to my newbie times. It made me more determine and now I have a collection. It takes some tweaking around & soon you will be the PRO. As long as U have fun, the rewards of a tasty ripe fig(s) is all that matters. I guess the other problem in Malaysia is how to keep the fig tree small. The weather there can make a fig tree mushroom into a giant tree in 3 yrs. I hope U can find a happy medium in restricting root growth to balance productivity.

Welcome
