hi all,

just wanted to introduce myself. I moved to Houston two months ago from San Francisco, and I am very interested in growing figs. Although a friend of mine says that squirrels eat all her figs, I will try to grow figs anyway. I already bought Violet de Bordeaux, Verte, Petite Negra, Celeste.

I was just told that there is a nice nursery near the place I live. http://buchanansplants.com/

My plan is to grow small trees. I came up with this list - these figs look like they are pretty small trees.
Doree (Goutte D'or)
Figue de Marseilles
Longue D'Aout
Madeleine des deux saisons
Dalmatie

Thank you!

Hi Andrey!  Welcome to the forum.

Welcome, Andrey. Sounds like a good plan.

Welcome!  You can grow some great, long season figs.  The ones you're planning are fine but you could probably do better.  Look around the forum, look for favorite or best figs threads and go crazy!  Of course if you have 30 acres just get them all!  I would  :)

Welcome.

Welcome, Andrey.
Aah, San Francisco!
Lots of generous members in this forum, and lots of people will
be pruning and giving away cuttings soon - make room!
Several members already listing on eBay, search for fig cuttings
and fig plants.

Welcome Audrey, folks here will steer you right.

Welcome to the forum.  There some good figgers down there around the Spring area.  Hope to see you at the next Big Fig Gig.

Hi Andrey,
Welcome.  Good to see another fig grower joining us!  You have four very nice varieties to start... I hope you have good luck with them!

Andrey,

Welcome and enjoy!  Don't know where you are in Houston area but RCW is also a good nursery.

Welcome to the forum and to Texas Audrey.

It would be nice to know what varieties these guys have.

My Doree (Goutte D'or), Figue de Marseilles and Dalmatie are still very small, and slow growers this summer when compared to other varieties I have, so it's hard to tell how well they will do in Austin, TX.

I lost both Madeleine des deux saisons plants last winter and will get it replaced next spring. It seemed to be more sensitive to cold than others.

My Nordland fig which some say it's similar to Long d'Aout is one of my favorite first year figs. I was going to get Long D'aout but postponed it since I have too many plants at this time.

As for top flavor and productivity, you should consider Col de Dame(Blanc, Noir or Gris). Although slow to ripen figs, It seems to be at home here in Texas. You will love this fig.

The Black Madeira despite being late to ripen is a top tasting fig and very productive here also.

I surrounded my figs with chicken wire after mice chewed the bark and rabbits ate the leaves, and managed to save a few figs this year.

I saw some squirrels nearby but they were not a problem this year.

Welcome. I am new to figs but not to squirrels. I have used a Kania and have been very happy. It's the only way I have found to deal with them.

Sas, where did you get your Doree, Figue de Marseilles and Dalmatie?
Nordland and Col de Dame look interesting - thanks!
