I was asked to introduce myself from other members so...I live 30 minutes outside of NYC and have always has a fascination with figs (my favorite fruit) and fig trees. I guess it comes with my Italian roots. I purchased my first tree (Ficus Carisa..Higo) last summer, it is about three feet tall and I was told it is winter hardy. Since I have an emotional connection with my late father through this tree, I am attempting to take excellent care of it. That may sound kooky but it is my story. Anyway, as I posted on other postings, I brought it into my basement, stopped watering it as suggested and two weeks ago, boom, it budded, I bought a grown light and am now watering it and treating it as a house planet until the spring. I have to say that I am floored by the friendly response that I receive after I incorrectly posted on someone else's posting earlier today. Very helpful advice. That is my story and I welcome all advice on how to make my dad proud. Earman

Welcome.

Greetings and welcome.
Did your fig have a dormant period? Even if it didn't I wouldn't worry about it... I think you are doing the best thing.
I don't know anything about that fig, do you have pictures?

Welcome Earman!!  : )

Greetings earman and welcome. I'm guessing that your dad is very proud already. Best of luck with your fig.

Welcome and best wishes for a fruitful journey!

Welcome. I second the statement about making your father proud.
I used to live in Larchmont, now I'm a Nutmegger (but I'll always be a New Yorker at heart).
Are you in Westchester?
I think your tree will need water as long as it has leaves.
Not as much as in the spring. You might want to water it only when the leaves droop, otherwise
you'll get root rot.

Welcome earman to the most addicting place on the internet! =)

Welcome!

Hi, Earman!  May your tree thrive!

You'll definitely learn enough here to take excellent care of your fig tree...and the many other fig trees that will surely follow :)

Good to have you aboard.

It did have a dormant period, right after I brought it in the basement, all the leaves fell off within a week and as I said, all was good until recently...I am thinking that maybe since we had several days of abnormally warm weather in late December, that it may have triggered growth but the strange thing was that it hadn't received any water???  I will attach photos asap.
