Hi,
My name is John and I live in Gibsonville, NC. I am currently a stay-at-home dad, having lost my job in 2007. It took a bit of adjustment but I truly enjoy my time with my son. Plus, it has allowed me to jumpstart my gardening interests.
My latest passion is figs, thus the new membership here. Neither my wife nor I have ever tasted a fresh fig but we love the dried ones we have had. With that in mind, I am starting to collect different varieties to grow. I hope to meet a lot of new friends here and learn how to really get my figs going.

Hello John,

My name name is Jarrett and Im stationed here in Japan at Yokota AFB part of the 374th MXS. My job is to jet engines. I love figs just as much as anyone else here, but I cant bring any into the country. So now I'm on a hunt to find some figs so I can start growing again. Again welcome!

Welcome to the Fig-4-Fun group. I am sure you will enjoy the company, learn  and have fun with figs. Good luck with figs and everything else in life.

John welcome to a great forum. I'm sure you like most of us will catch the fig bug after you taste a good fresh fig. there are some real experienced growers here who will share their knowledge and help you be successful in growing whether it being in pots or in ground or both. I am also new to growing figs but can say I have learned much on this forum. Most of mine are in pots with a few I recently put in ground. I grew up eating fresh but was never into the garden thing until recently. I tried growing figs about 18 yrs ago and failed miserably I only stated up again 2 yrs ago and am doing better with the help of others here.

Thanks, guys. I've got some Brown Turkey and Celeste. And I just got a bunch of cuttings that might be mislabelled or unknown. Should be interesting.

Welcome John,

You've joined a great forum. One with members respect one another. Many here including myself will help guide you in the right direction in being successful in fig growing.

Can't speak for myself but there are many members here with many years of experience, research and knowledge. Which it is a plus!
You will get to know them as time goes by.

Sorry about your job and hope all's o.k and hope you will find one soon.

Hi John, and welcome. I am still fairly new to the forum, and have been made to feel comfortable here, too.  I left my job last Tuesday and plan to spend as much time as possible growing FOOD this spring/summer. With the loss of my income and rising prices, every bit I can grow will help offset expenses.

I got bit by the fig bug many years ago, and I'll tell you, it's a terminal condition. Once you have it, you never get over the thrill of the hunt for new varieties or the joy of a new acquisition!

Yes, I am afraid figs are just a continuance of a lifelong addiction to plants for me. I'm constantly grabbing a clipping or collecting seeds to experiment with.
I've been working on growing food for us as well. I'm really into the idea of permaculture after reading "Gaia's Garden." I've got plants and seeds planted wherever I can find space. Each day, I add a little more.

I ripped out two roses that weren't doing well a while ago, so I could use the space for crookneck squash....

I am planting my spaghetti squash next to the side of the house. I am putting in a bit of wire fencing to grow them vertically. 

So far, I have planted three types of squash, three types of heirloom tomatoes, green beans, black beans, white and yellow onions, garlic, carrots, beets, radishes, turnips, several lettuce varieties, peas, spinach, parsley, basil, rosemary, sage, fennel, chamomile, two thymes, oregano, lavendar, salsify, peanuts, figs (of course), blueberries, bush cherries, various flowers, bamboo (in containment), cannas, paw paw trees. Whew! - more to come.
 
I am experimenting a bit since I am used to Ohio and Illinois weather. We've only been in NC for two years. So far though, everything is doing quite well.

This, after I trenched the yard, put down drainage pipe and created new beds over the newly drained yard. It was like a lake when we first moved in.
I may be unemployed, but I am not idle by any means.

I'm tired just reading all that! 

I'm not used to being home like this, and have been doing something outside every day this past week. Feels weird being here--- like I am out of place or something. But I keep planting a bit every day. We have about another two weeks to get everything in before I have to start worrying about vegetables pollenating during the high temps of summer.
