new to f4f/ excited to learn

  • tvp

Hello all! Just wanted to say hi; I've been browsing through various topics and thought I'd join in the fun! My head's buzzing a little as I try to take things in, but I think I'll absorb a lot as time goes on (I love this kind of thing).

I live in Northwest VA (Shenandoah Valley) which is zone 6b and I think has a lot of potential for growing some nice figs. So far I have a baby (but happy) Celeste, a young fruiting Chicago Hardy, and some cuttings from what may be a Brown Turkey.

So -- I'd love a few things to get me started (some of them I'll find on here on my own I'm sure).
- Any advice for a (relatively) new fig grower
- Favorite varieties for this area/zone of the country
- And this might be a lot to ask (I'm not sure how free everyone is with their collections) but I'd love any scrap cuttings any of you felt like chucking at me so I can keep practicing propagation and increase my own collection, etc.

So hi! Any thoughts?

Hello TVP.......I would just read as many interesting postings from the various members first........
The members are very generous, but I believe they get turned off when someone logs in and asks for cuttings....
If possible look around your neighborhood and look to see if anyone has any fig trees....most people plant them in
their backyards...so you may peek down an alley or two....I have been getting lucky that we have a lot of black
missions available in the area....Also you may want to tell the others your name and area...Welcome to the Forum.!!!!

TVP,

A bit of a warning is a lot of people in Hampton Roads are very shy and are not as out going as we F4F members are.

I am located in Virginia Beach and can affirm that there are many fig varieties one can grow in our area. I am currently approaching 20 different varieties all grown in pots. Many varieties can overwinter just fine in ground outdoors and not loose any growth from frost damage.

As Armando mentioned, look around your neighborhood and look for established trees already in ground. Many places will let you take a cutting or ask you to wait till they prune the tree in the Feb or March time frame. This is actually the best time to obtain new cuttings and there will be tons of others on here as well.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks guys. Armando -- advice well taken; I'd hate to come off as a mooch but I thought it would be worth a shot to see what people have! I don't have a lot to offer right now other than questions, so I figured I'd be lurking around reading everyone's wisdom rather than contributing much of my own for a little while anyway.

I've been fig-hunting locally for a few weeks now, with not much success, but not giving up easily!

Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome.

Don't overwhelm yourself. You will feel like Mickey Mouse in Sorcerer's Apprentice, but surely see what others are growing.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi Tvp. I'm a new member myself, but welcome. I have quite a few Lattarulas and VDB rooting, or in the process of rooting, at the moment. They won't be ready until Oct. or Nov., unless you want the rooting ones in the cup. PM me if you want one of these. Elizabeth.

Welcome and enjoy tvp.  Figgy Frank is also from VA.  You might want to look him up.

Welcome, tvp.  I'm also new here and hoping to learn a lot.

Welcome tvp.....mwahahaha another one bitten by the fig bug!
