New to Fig Forum!

Ok,  so do I introduce myself as a self proclaimed fig addict or pretend I have it all together when it comes to these little gems.......

How about this: Hi, my name is Amber and every year towards fall I manage to eat my weight in figs, now thanks to discovering fig butter... I will eat my weight in fig butter the rest of the year.
I live in C. Oregon where, until recently thanks to a fellow fig fanatic, I was under the impression they did not grow here, I was kindly told otherwise.  SO!  That said,  I want to grow my own figs!!!
How's that?

Oh, this may need to be moved to the newbie section or something

Welcome to the disease ;)

Have you figured out what varieties you want to grow?

Welcome to the forum Amber.

So Nichole,
Being in C. Oregon what zone am I??
Oh and all varieties would be great!

Thanks Sam

Welcome Amber, you will learn plenty here about figs. I'm sure there are other members in your area who can recommend which varieties to grow.

Welcome aboard Amber. Loved the "eat my weight in figs" part.

Here's a website to help you figure it out. Just put in your zip code
http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMweb/default.aspx

Amber has a big green house. NO LIMITS!! ;)

Welcome Amber! Greenhouse you say.... I could give some recommendations to fill that up really fast lol.

Thank you all, I look forward to starting some figs here.  It looks like (according to that site) we are Zone 6a  -5 to -10
Yep, greenhouse!  I will post a picture as soon as I can figure out how.
Recommend away, Null

Always happy to give a warm welcome to a new member Amber...I think you are going to like this place...you will learn a lot about figs, and make some new friends too.    :)

Welcome from me too Amber!  Have fun learning about all the kinds of figs you can grow and EAT!

Suzi

Amber,

Is your greenhouse heated? What are the min. temps encountered inside? (these I would recommend growing in containers if you have temps above 32 degrees).

Here are some recommendations; Dragon Fruit, Jaboticaba, Mango, Poha berry (Physalis peruviana), Passiflora edulis (If you have some nice trellis), Guava, Eugenia luschnathiana, Achachairu (Garcinia sp.), Papaya.

Number one pick would have to be Dragon Fruit though for taste, appearance, and yield. In a 10 gal container with a decent trellis setup around it should produce fruit after 2 years under a greenhouse.

Of course there is hundreds of great figs to grow in containers! :). I just like growing the exotic and tasty hard to find fruits, since you have a greenhouse you have special conditions to grow a lot of these subtropical/tropical fruits.

Amber, I have a few varieties that I am starting, as you know from facebook. I will send you a few different varieties so you can try them out. They're all a little different. Light figs and dark figs have different flavors and fans. Come spring time I'll get your address and send you a variety pack. Then you can have fun researching them. I like searching the forum for fig varieties and see what people  say about them. Gives me something to look forward to.

Figs do well in containers. Many members do all containers because of weather restrictions. Most of mine are in containers.

Thank you ALL!!!  I see there is going to be a wealth of information here... I am super excited.  The eating part of course will by far be my favorite.  Sadie and Violet cannot visit during fig harvest however......  lol

Null:  No, it is not heated as of yet.  I CAN heat it if need be.  My rabbits live in there for the winter so I like to keep it cool.
I LOVE Passion fruit.... would love to grow some.  My great grandfather had a huge orange, avocado, lemon, pomegranate, etc grove and had passion fruit as well.  Granted he lived in S. Cal
Dragon fruit would be very interesting.  I may give that a whirl.

Nichole: That is sooo awesome!  I am really really excited. Thank You!  Should I start them in the greenhouse?  There are so many it is hard to know where to start.  I would love to have some that go
to and from the greenhouse so I can put them in the courtyard in the summer.  Oh that is the other thing.  When my dad built the house he strategically arranged the house so that the courtyard is always warm... I could possibly grow some there and leave them out for the winter??  The garden area is exposed but down the hill from the greenhouse and packing trees back and forth would be VERY difficult.
I put a pic of the greenhouse in my avatar and in my profile is the garden area.  I cannot figure out how to post them here.... sorry

Amber,

I have about 20-25 varieties of dragon fruit now, so you can contact me in the future if your interested in cuttings. Dragon fruit are hardy down to 28 degrees. So if you can maintain the greenhouse over 30 degrees you should be fine. If your growing in a greenhouse you will want ones that are self pollinating like 'Purple Haze' http://www.tropicalfruitnursery.com/dragon/pages/purple-haze.htm. As for the figs, I would work on picking varieties that stagger out the harvest over a few months.

Oh Wow! Those are beautiful!!  Right now, no heat but I want to get some radiant hanging heaters for next winter..... I will most assuredly contact you for cutting!  Thank you for the offer!
ppfftttt, there are so many it is overwhelming.  Nichole is sending me some starts so that is going to help ALOT. Until recently I had NO idea there were more than 2 or 3 varieties.  I knew there were green and purple and that they were delicious and addicting. haha
I have quite a bit of research ahead of me... good thing we are slow at work!

In my future house I will have a heated greenhouse.

I love all your posts about your future house!!  lol

Welcome to the forum.

Hey Amber! Welcome, soon you will have the fever.
