New to Fig Forum!

Welcome Amber.

Thank you all for the warm welcome!!  I went out to my greenhouse last night and informed my rabbits they would no longer
be occupying my greenhouse in the winter.....  I now have a bunch of grumpy rabbits.

You could always change directions and multiply the rabbit's population. I've read that rabbits put out 8 BTU's of heat an hour!! You can save fuel, grow figs and raise dinner- all in one small area! Dinner(rabbit) is optional but if you are concerned about their happiness then I'd pass on this...:)

Welcome Amber.
Its gonna be a fun ride.

Welcome.

Pittsburgh:  The rabbits definitely put out the heat... unfortunately they also fog the place up.  lol
We are going to move them just because they can't handle the summer heat.  My breeder does will
probably be kept in the greenhouse in the winter just because they are closer to the house.  Yes, some
are dinner rabbits. :) That way I could maintain 35 degrees or better so the babies stay warm and
the figs are happy!

Thanks everyone!  I am fig hunting this week!

Amber, do you eat gophers too?  I could ship you a few.  You could build a glass cage and watch them eat roots, like one of those ant aquariams...

Just kidding, but it appears gophers multiply faster than rabbits.

Amber, what breeds do you have? Once upon a time I used to breed and show rabbits. When I get my future house I hope to have a breeding trio for dinner - for us and the pups. A medium sized trio - like Florida Whites.

Haha!!  EEeewww Suzi, can stand the little varmits!

Nichole -  we have Flemish and NZW, but  I just bought 4 Satin this weekend.  A Copper Buck, Red Buck, Broken Red Doe, and a Chocolate Doe.  We hope to get
enough stock to keep the dogs and us in a good supply.  I have noticed a marked change in Cricket since being on mostly rabbit.  She has some weird digestion
issue.   What types did you breed and show?  These Satins are SOOOOO cool!!

I had a variety of breeds when I started. Mini Lops, Holland Lops, Rex, Dwarf Hotot, Jersey Woolies, angoras.... and then eventually settled on and specialized in Holland Lops. I did quite well with them and showed at ARBA nationals my final year as a youth and got 2nd in two of my classes out of like 200-300 in each class. Hollands are very popular as you can imagine, the comp is tough. I gave them up years ago to go to college. I don't see myself getting into them like I once was, as I now have my pups to take up that competitive streak I have. But I wouldn't mind raising some meat rabbits once we move.

Wow!  You did really well!   Going to go look up some of those breeds... not sure what the Woolie looks like or the Hotot.  I think I may stick with these satins.
They are beautiful and are meat producers as well.
I didn't realize how much I would enjoy them.  I raised them as a kid but that was just hobby.  Now I truly enjoy the little bouncy critters.  The dogs do as well.  lol
