New to figs

Hello,

I'm Tyler from London, Ontario area and just wanted to introduce myself. Figs have become a recent interest of mine after buying a tray of figs at the grocery store last summer. I had never eaten a fresh fig before. I know the ones I tasted don't compare to a tree ripen one as I've read...but nonetheless it was good enough that I wanted to try to grow my own.

I have 2 plants right now.. one is a Colasanti Dark that I just bought last week. It was from Colasanti's Nursery in Leamington, ON area.. its actual name is unknown. The other is also unknown that I bought last summer at Heritage Country Gardens in London, ON. I'm hoping to find the name of that variety from the person who supplied them with the plants but haven't heard from him yet.

I also grow an assortment of brambles and hardy kiwi. The kiwi has been a keen interest of mine and I've collected quite a collection of different varieties. I can see that I am going to have problems with the huge volume of fig varieties out there!!! Like the kiwis I'm always interested in a new variety. I haven't harvested my first fig yet and already I'm researching all the different varieties and seeing which ones are the best lol. I think I've been bitten already with the fig bug!!

Anyways just wanted to say hello and look forward to reading all the great info here at the forum and hopefully be a contributing member someday soon!

Tyler, What a nice introduction!!  Welcome to the forum!  So you are in Canada!  There are a few members here in Canada.  I'm sure they will chime in with a welcome!

Hello, Tylerj!

Tyler,

It looks like you are a little north of Cleveland. Jeez, and I thought I liked a challenge . . . . I think there is a grower who sells figs  on your side close to Buffalo. Otherwise, check http://www.brugmansia-quebec.com/Catalogue%20Figuier.html

Welcome Tyler ,

Come October I could have cuttings from a few varieties if you are in the Toronto area or can have someone else get them for you , I may have some Niagara Black that you had pm'ed me about also .
Colosanti dark is an excellent fig for our climate and very productive so you will enjoy it I'm sure .

John

Yes right across lake Erie from Cleveland. I do like challenges lol. I also grow oranges, lemons, limes, pineapple, mango, coffee, date palms, coconut palms, plus whatever else weird or exotic. If it has a seed I will try to grow it lol. I built a 10x12 glass greenhouse and grow the fuzzy kiwi in there.

My wife dreads this time of year because everything has to start coming back in the house lol.

Thanks for the link! :)

Thanks John! I'd gladly drive there.

Welcome Tylerj:

I'm in South East Michigan.  Adriano could be a good source for you.  I've been to Leamington many times for work.  I stopped in at Colasanti's once for lunch. They have quite the establishment.  This was before I caught the fig bug so I never thought to look at the Figs.  I can't bring back plants over the border, but there are lots of good members in Canada.  Good luck!

thanks all for the welcome :)
