New to figs

Hi Everyone!  New here and also new with figs and looking for some advice on getting cuttings started.  I recently learned that you can grow a tree from a cutting and now want to try it out and see how it goes.  How do you guys get cuttings?  I dont have a tree I can take from but I see a few for sale on ebay and amazon, anyone have experience with this?  Also, can anyone give a tree recommendation for zone 6A?

Thanks!

Welcome Goldy,
You've come to the right place there are a lot of nice folk that can give you information and help. As far as getting cuttings, you can buy them or you can trade. You can do searches on here by topic and look up earlier posts on what you are interested in. You do need to be careful where you buy from.
Best of luck and welcome.

hi, goldy. before buying a tree, you should brouse this site. get familiar with lots of trees. as you search, you'll find zone info and other relevant data. tarting with cuttings may not be the best way to start. i studied for many months before attempting that.

good luck.

Welcome Goldy, I highly recommend getting some cheap cuttings on ebay to try it out. You will find tons of info on the start here thread at the top of the forum lists.
Good Luck.

Hi, Goldy.  Welcome to the forum.  As others have said, there is a wealth of information here that will help you get started with everything from rooting cuttings to different varieties to info on zones.  There are some very good threads on rooting cuttings.  That would probably be a good place to start.   Also, there is a thread regarding reliable sources on ebay.  A few that I can think of off the top of my head are: drivewayfarmer, tmc2001, figsnstuff, r.kinaia, and mnedelcu.....these are their ebay id's and they are all members of the forum.

Jules, shame on you! You forgot our Texan..... fatnsassytexan he's on the list of preferred sellers too.

Thanks for the advice so far.  My goal is to get some cheap cuttings and try not to kill them.  Probably going to keep a few in pots but I do have three I put in the yard so hopefully I will have something to trade in a while.

Get some cheep brown turkey cuttings to practice on.

I sell some on ebay. Don't really have any cuttings as of yet. Got a couple of trees listed there.

But first I would say you need to look at the thread best tree for my location at the top or the main forum page. Being 6A I would have to say hardy chicago would be a good starter. I grow mine in ground in 6B and its one of my best trees for my location.

Hi Goldy

Im here too as a newbie so Ill add my two cents in.  LOL

Buy something thats not very expensive but your interested in.

Practice your rooting skills as it applies to figs and see how it works for you.

Taking in consideration the age , strain etc of the cutting.

If you are succesfull and happy with results over the next few months than move accordingly.

Im my humble opoion it is better to do a little peractice before  losing a cutting you really wanted.

Im a skilled gardener but take a knee when it comes to figs.

Good luck

Damn the torpedoes. Unless you are talking about something rare and expensive, get yourself started. Figs came over all kinds of ways and survived in all kinds of conditions. Even if you don't go to Vegas or even play the dollar lotto, you will enjoy the thrill of  starting cuttings and there are all sorts that will satisfy your parameters. Which ever way you go, welcome and good luck.

Well said dale.

Two great source of cuttings are Jon's cutting offer (usually in February) and UCD cutting offer (requests are due by Nov 01, but there has been some question if they will continue). Between the two there are many extremely good varieties available for not a whole lot of money.  There's no reason to settle for crap, here.

In the mean time, you may want to find a live plant you can grow while you practice with cuttings.  You'll be a couple of years ahead of the game in terms of getting your own fruit.  Check out Jon's Availability List for trees.  It is probably dated, but it's worth checking into.  Others in similar zones to you seem to have good luck with Chicago Hardy, Atreano, Marseilles Black, and Voilette de Bordeaux.  There are many members of this forum who are growing in similar zones who have done some of the leg work in selecting for you including, but by no means limited to,  Herman2, Drivewayfarmer, 7Deuce, Bass, and Gorgi.

OOPS...that's twice I've overlooked my Texas heritage.  Leaving out fatnsassytexan on this post and not using a Texas quarter in some of my pics of figs.  =(   Believe me, I feel properly chastised now....lol.
