New to Growing Fig Trees in Containers

Hi, I have been researching on how to grow fig trees in containers. I'm still
new to growing figs and need some advice.

Two years ago I got a fig seedling. I started with a small pot, maybe
six inches in diameter and last year repotted to a larger pot, 12" diameter.
Last summer I got 3 figs and they were great.
I brought the pot into my unheated garage and left it there until now,
watering every 3 - 4 weeks. It is pot bound and I want to repot it to a 19"
diameter pot. My question is, when should I do the repotting? And should I
do it before I start putting the tree out during the day and back in at night?

Another reason for repotting is that when I originally potted it in the 12" pot,
I used regular top soil and it is hard as a rock now. I will be using an organic
potting mix with compost in the new pot.

Any other advise will also be appreciated.

Thank You,
Weggy

I would do it now....

It's probably best to do it before it wakes up from dormancy.  Now or soon  :)

John, rcanter:  Thanks, I will plan to do it this week.

Ditto, the "do-it-now" advice, with this added proviso: re-pot but use a quick-draining mix like a 5-1-1/modified 5-1-1-1.  Search this forum for mix formulations, and recommendations.  Containerized figs need special mixes and a regular care schedule re: watering, fertilizing, etc.  Use a large container - minimum of 10 gallons - and keep the root-zone cool.  Roots can quickly cook in broiling hot, full-sun exposures, especially in small pots.  Guess how I know this.

(Did you mention a "seedling" fig tree, or did you really mean.... a "cutting".... re: Post #1)?

Here is one sure success story about potted figs

Bill's figs (NJ)

I would agree with gorgi's suggestion and do a search as well on this site about sub irrigated containers.

Frank:  Thanks for the input, will look up and find good mix for the containers. And yes, they were cuttings not seedlings. I'm planting vegetables inside now for the summer and using seeds so I call everything seedlings now.
BTW, the cuttings i have are from a friend's tree in the Bronx.

George/Kerry; Thanks also for your input, will do more research to hopefully get better
plants and more figs.

I repot before they break dormancy.  Although if you don't screw with the root ball, you're probably fine to repot them at any time.

Another piece of advice is to figure an automated drip system.   I use mister landscaper drippers and a timer.
