Hello fellow fig growers. Hope every one is having a good day!!Im new to growing figs. Recently my wife bought me a fig tree From a local nursery. Its a English Brown Turkey. and I need tips on how to grow it. Im going to keep it in a Pot to take it in when it gets cold here in Rhode Island and i have perilite, Sphagnum Peat Moss, Manure, and Potting soil (left over from wife's flowers.). what would be a good ratio. the pot i have is 9 gallons. The second tip would be how to make it into a tree or keep that shape. There is more LOL. I have saved a Fig tree I think. My Neighboor bought a fig tree about 4 years ago( she forgot wha type of fig it was). This year she forgot to winterize it and she thought it was dead. so she asked if I could dig it out for her. After i did she told me to throw it out. and i asked to keep it. well i have put it into my yard and added some Miracle-Gro Plant Food and now it looks like it will survive. anything special i have to do.This one will be a shrub thanx and sorry for so much questions here are pics of the 2 figs
Keep your potting mix light. (especially if you plan on moving it in and out each fall *after dormancy* and back out in the spring *after chances of frost*) Personally I look for a bag of small (1/2 inch and smaller pieces) of pine bark mulch. Mix it with the perlite (2 gals perlite to 6 gals mulch. Figs will not like the manure, unless it is well rotted. (and if so, spread a little of it around the in ground plant in about a month or so (but no later than Aug 1st). The fig you are planting in the ground is much better off not in a "tree shape". The goal year after year is survival of wood over winter and survival is better (mathematically) with more stems. What part of RI? We've got a member in RI now and I was born and lived there for 25+ years. I tend to get back a couple times a year too. STill have family there (that and we've got to get certain RI delicacies from time to time)~Chills
Thanx for the fast reply I live in providence silver lake area. Im planing to wait for the tree to get a lil bigger at least 26 Inches. I just want to get every thing ready. so a no no for the manure atleast not yet. and how about the potting soil? discard it or add a little. The one I planted in the grown i will keep it as a shrub.
I use no potting soil in my container figs. If you use some, then try to keep it to less than 50%. The goal is quick draining and light (to move it)~Chills
