So I'm thinking.... we got Common Figs, San Pedro, Smyrna and Capri.

But few days ago I came across this ... Eatable Capri.

Sweet but not full of honey, soft juicy skin, very attractive and vigorous grower.

What is this Fig !

It's not Capri, because it's so sweet and dense, yet, carries Wasps and has an on going production of different generation fruit/flowers like Capri.

So, I'll be uploading pictures as we go...

Sheesh Aaron , I think you live in a fig paradise ! This is really interesting.  

What is the difference between this fig and a Smyrna/Calimyrna fig? Please explain clearly.

If it has male flowers inside it's an edible caprifig.  There are others.  Gillette, Crosic (They may be the same), Enderud and Saleeb are the best known ones.  There are probably others.

If there are no male flowers then it's a female fig - either Common, San Pedro or Smyrna.

It is funny, I found yesterday an edible black caprifig! Quite large figs, like those in your post, with a hollow center but some meat around it. The taste is sweet but not very intense. I will post a pic in a separate thread.

As Bob said,could be an edible Caprifig or... some other fig   (Smyrna/San Pedro or Common) on which somebody grafted a Caprifig on a couple of branches..edible figs on one branch and another one showing male figs

This process is very common in my area (grafting two or three Caprifig buds on Smyrnas and/or San Pedro. -automatic pollination - !

I'm glad it moved your interest guys, here's some more pictures as a continued update, where you'll see few wasps on the un-open figs and the interior of the fig...and finally the different leaves with varied lobe counts and shapes.

 

The eyes are all open.

   

the Wasps were all over them in constant move.

 

This flowers are at full blossom. Although a bit on dry side due to full bloom it tasted sweet to my surprise.

The Purple layer is noticeable between the Pulp and Meat laters. I'm starting to believe this is yet one more sign of the fig being pollinated.

I'd gladly pay for cuttings of any edible caprifigs.  I'd also pay for a few figs with wasps inside.  Don't want the ones with Intel inside, I can get that here.  :)

Can you ask the owner if the tree was grafted ? Or what strain he thinks it is ?
On grafted trees, after some years it is almost impossible to spot the grafts .

I don't know exactly the science behind caprifigs, but it seems to me that you should find pollen in some of the figs at some times of the year.
Did you find pollen in those figs ?
Normally the pollen filled figs are not edible - they should be corky, dry and sandy.
Normally, you should find meat ( wasp larvae - sorry just couldn't resist) inside of the male - pollen filled - figs .
Did you find such a fig on the tree (larvae -/+ pollen)? On all branches ?
@Greenfig : same questions for the dark caprifig you found .

If the fruits are eatable, then another nice find.

@jd, sorry I can't ask anyone, it's a corporate office building.
I stopped by last night , on my way home, and picked few more figs form this tree and took a cutting for someone I promised I would send to...
I ate 2 of the figs...but left other 2 cut in the plate over the counter. In the morning the place was crawling with wasps...

           


I decided to put the entire plate by the ONLY breba with an open eye that I have ... It's like figs are wasp magnet...LOL

The last set of pictures are of one non-edible Profichi with plenty of wasps-
Most of the insects may have already abandoned the fig (*) looking for the next crop fruit 'Mammoni' which may probably show already on the axils of the leaves on the green wood (2014)

These are the only fruit botanically prepared to accept and keep/develop the eggs from those wasps
Did you eat those Profichi ?..you may have swallowed some insects..

I do not think that those wasps will bring anything special to the brebas at this advanced stage of maturation

(*) see the tunnel through the  fruit axis straight to the ostiole and its male flower bush+pollen

those last two pics are my plants, it always had the open ostiole. I'll post pics when I open it ...some day. I want to find out what variety it is, so I am going to let it ripen.
