New Violette de Bordeaux

Found this today about 1/2 mile from the beach. Very impressive tree.

Breba was one of the best brebas I have had. Needed a couple more days, but was far enough along to not bleed sap when picked.

I'm guessing you got cuttings, Jon? They look nice and big!

Nice find!  That's one for the collection.  Now why aren't there any of those kind of trees here?

Nate

Will work on getting cuttings.

Nate, this is the first winner in a long time. I add a half dozen trees to the "neighborhood" inventory almost every week (more than 400 so far), but there haven't been many demonstrated winners, so far.

Wow, what a beautiful fig. Violette de Beach:-) Very nice Jon!

That is a healthy looking tree.  I think VdB is happier in a moderate climate like yours compared to out by me with the extreme heat.

I don't think it's just the climate. I have VdB from three different sources, and they all are stunted when compared to other figs growing immediately adjacent to them. They all possibly might have originally come from UCD via different growers, and if so, they have severe FMV which has left them non-vigorous. The fig in Jon's photo just might not be infected, or infected with a less severe strain(s), as well as deriving the benefits of growing in a real Mediterranean climate.

That is a pretty fig.

To my surprise, my $7 TC VdB has more than doubled in size in the 5 weeks I have had it potted and outside in the shade of a tree. Frankly, when I first saw it, I thought it would be dead in 3 weeks. Now, it looks strong and healthy. It even has a new stem at its base with its own small leaves. With luck, I will see fruit on it 2 years from now. We shall see!

My mother tree came from an online nursery, Gurneys, and was labeled "Italian Honey."  Obviously, when dark figs showed, I freaked, and got the ID from the forum here.  That tree is a monster!  It does love heat, and it, and it's child (an airlayer) are both thriving in different areas on this property.  Many of you have cuttings from my trees, and from what I've heard, they are doing well.

That tree you found, Jon is big, full, and probably pretty old.  They don't get that full fast.

Did you meet the owners?

Suzi

Hey Jon, Let's see the leaf pattern.

3 and 5 lobed VdB leaves.

so jon.. can i get a first dibs on those cuttings?

Have to get some cuttings, first. ;-))

Beautiful one! I'm in line for cuttings please!

I wonder if this is the same vdb that nelson20vt has, he posted some pics of a very big vdb, he called it vdb-af.

On getting cuttings: I am changing my technique, will try to contact owner first.  Old Way: Get cuttings first, Get more cuttings, then think about contacting owner...LOL
So Jon: Keep us updated on what happened. It was a great looking find.

Jon, will be at Fig Fiesta, but if you get cuttings before, consider me I am here in Escondido fire area.
