Newbie’s First Fig

Harvested my first ripe fig yesterday!   At 5.2 oz or 148 gm, it’s all most a Happy Meal.   The fig is an “Orphan” from a spring 2013 cutting, that was gifted to me from member FMD.  Thank you Frank, this is proof I didn’t kill all the cuttings you sent me, ha, ha.

Anyway, most of my 2013 cuttings are full of fruit but, this was the first to make it to the kitchen.   I’ve been watching it closely and hoping it would ripen to its optimum on the tree.  In hindsight now, I wish I had picked a few days earlier.  Think it was a little overdone by the time I cut into.

Taste…. As others have reported, it was a little on the watery side, borderline bland taste, creamy, nice seed and very light berry flavor.  Skin was totally edible, nice flavor, crunchy.    Hope you enjoy the photos…

Thanks for the great photos and taste description, Jack. Looking forward to tasting this cultivar. I understand it is more famous for quantity than quality, but what the hay.

I can almost taste it.  Thanks for posting your photos!

Nice one Jack...I have an Orphan going here on the East Coast (N.J.) with about 6 figs on it ( not as far along in the ripening cycle as yours )...keeping fingers crossed that I will be tasting an Orphan fig some time in September.

Jack, that's an impressive size...
I'm curious to whether it will sweeten more if you let it really overripe...to get more caramelie . Underripe fig are no way any sweeter than overripe ones that's for sure.
It's a beauty. Could make great jam material ;)

Frank my friend, I want to adopt an Orphan. It looks nice. This will be on my list when we get together for the fall/winter transactions. But, let me know how it tastes before I get too crazy. You know I like taste more than name and fame. Thanks Frank for all the help.

Great looking fig there, Jack.  Good job on nurturing the Orphan!
Just one question, where does one find a miniature quarter?  No way a real quarter could be so much smaller than that lovely fig!  Smiles...

Congrats and well done!

Congratulations!  The sweet taste of success!

First Fig. Congratulations. Great picks.

Thanks for all the compliments and comments.  Really funny how my first fig, would be so huge!  I thought sure it would fall victim to any number of local varmints before ripening on the tree.    Going to be some good eats here soon, Negrrone is almost ripe and then many more following.

Thanks everyone for your support, generosity and friendship.   The challenge of getting a little stick of wood to a producing fig tree has been nothing short of fascinating and very rewarding effort.  Kinda like hatching out a brood of chicks……………… :-)
