Newbie In The House

Hi Everyone,
My name is Tami and I have just joined the forum. I live in SE Texas and for 6 years have been trying to find things that grow well here. I am originally from Kirkland, WA and the temperature difference is throwing everything I ever learned about gardening in the garbage.

This year I have started a small fig corner and am hoping we finally have success. I have; Brown Turkey, Celeste, Improved Celeste, Kadoda and, Black Mission that will probably fruit this year.

I murdered by mold the 3 Desert King cuttings I bought and am now trying to root 3 Petite Negri in a perilite compost mix.

I purchased the Root Riot plugs and we'll have to see how that goes. I have an unknown yellow species in them to try them out.

I am so thrilled to have found this web site. I figured out after the fact that the Desert King probably weren't my best choice anyway. I am having a lot of fun reading the threads, thank you all for sharing such important information.

Tami...welcome to the forum, and good luck with your figs...I just started my first root riot tray on 3/6/13, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed...lots to learn here...enjoy.

Welcome Tami!

Tami,
Welcome to the forum.  I would guess you are somewhere in the Bay Area and that area was once a great fig production area with several large fig growing operations around Galveston, Friendswood, and Pearland.  One of the most grown figs in that area was the Magnolia (Brunswick).  If you got your yellow fig from around there it may well be a Lemon (Blanche) or a Kadota, which seems to be a local favorite (???)  There are still a few remnants of those fig groves still around but most have been replaced by houses.

There are a lot of us growing figs here in Texas and we welcome you.

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

I am Lake Jackson Danny so very close to all the places you mentioned. I am very happy to hear I have picked a good crop for the area. Peaches are a nightmare here as are plums due to all the critters. Last year I chased off a bird eating my ONLY plum!!! (Little jerk, I ate it anyway!) Between squirrels, raccoons and birds I don't think the bugs have a chance to ruin anything.

I am putting in enough figs to hopefully have some left for us.

Welcome. You aren't missing much in the Kirkland area right now.... rain rain rain

That's what our kids are telling us. We had our daughter and son in law a week ago, they just wanted to see the sun again. haha

Welcome to the forum Tami.

I can't wait to see how things go for you there, I know James is a forum member here from Texas I am sure he can give you a few tips about your area ( If it similar to his I know texas is a big state).

Hope to see you with plates full of figs this summer/Autumn

Welcome, Tami!

Welcome Tami!

Welcome from me too!  Good luck and enjoy all you learn from the members on this forum!

Suzi

Welcome......Not sure about the racoons and the birds, but squirrels cook up quite well if they are young....lol....

All recipes will be tried LOL!

Welcome

Welcome Tami,

I lived in SE Houston from 79 - 83. Lots of fig trees in that area. Yours will do fine.

By the way I'm glad you know how to spell your name. My wife is named Tami too. She likes figs too. Likes to eat them not so crazy about the planting of them.

Thank you so much everyone for making me feel so welcome.

Jeez Darkman...you get really cold in the winter. I couldn't take it, that's why we moved here.

Welcome from me too Mrs. Pacumio and I hope you enjoy plenty Black Missions figs this year!

Welcome to the forum. Loads of info on here, and very friendly people.

Welcome!  Desert King would be fine for you.  A good start to the fig season.

Welcome, Tami, from NorCal. Best wishes for a fruitful year.

welcome tami. with bit of practice, rooting shouldn't be too much of an issue. almost everyone loses cuttings here and there.

Thank you very much Eden....I think my black missions will be fantastic....someone sent me a fabulous tree that is already in ground. wink wink

Welcome to  Figs4Fun.  The learning curve will be a short one, and you will have delicious figs in no time at all.  You will get good information from some very accomplished, master, growers.  Not all figs are equal, and picking the best varieties for your growing conditions is half the battle.

Good luck with your fig "jones".  Check in, often.

Frank

Welcome
