Newbie looking for cuttings!

Hey! I've been looking through the forums for a while and on other websites as to which Fig tree would overall be best in my location (South of St. Louis, Missouri) zone 6b and I came up with Chicago Hardy! I was wondering what might be the best way to get some cuttings! Keep in mind I'm in college and have never seen or tasted a fig before sadly. Thanks!

you should keep your eyes open for fig trees in your area... the best trees are those already proven to grow in our weather.  I bought a tiny HC from an online co. less than $5. it was a stick with some roots and leaves, yes, it died in the first year (new and did not know how to care for it) and now it is growing, but I cannot say it is the best fig. I have a very prolific fig tree. Look me up and see the pictures. If you are in college, you most likely will not have the time to baby the cuttings, or you may... it can be frustrating  and it can be very fun... I lost so many that is not even funny.
However, my local figs, I have no problem making them duplicate, triplicate, airlayers... grafts, all is fine with locally approved fig trees.

Thanks for the advice! Unfortunatly I have never seen a fig tree before in this area or even figs haha. I will definitely look you up!

Welcome to the forum.
Hey, I remember watching a tv show way back called "Adam 12".  What does Adam17 mean? :)

Hardy Chicago seems like a good choice to me.

I'm pretty sure there are some on ebay right now, and for decent prices.

Or you could wait a couple of days and order them from Jon (owner of this site) when he posts his cuttings list.

I'd recommend the 2nd route: you're more certain to get correctly labeled, high quality cuttings from Jon, plus he deserves the business for making such a great site and helping so many folks.

Welcome :)

Sammy: wayyy back when I was 17 and first made an email account I thought it would cool like (hey it's Adam!!) and have just stuck with it ever since haha. And thanks! I was thinking either Hardy Chicago, Brown Turkey, Violet De Bordeaux, Celeste or King Desert!

Greenfin: Thanks! I'll probably just go with Jon then! I'm pretty excited to start some fig trees here!

Welcome to the forum!  I'm a grandma and love the enthusiasm of youth!!  Where will you put your figs when you grow them?  Are you in a dorm?  Just curious...

You did choose some pretty nice varieties which proves you are reading the forum.  It's called Desert King, btw, and Brown Turkey is not one that should be on your list.  Next year I'll have many more Violet De Bordeaux cuttings, in fact, I might be able to give the tree at our old house one more whack just for you (No pm's please from the forum) ;-))!

We are going there next week, and digging the old girl up.  She will benefit from having some of her old branches cut.  She will find a place here on our new property.  I'll pm you IF I'm able to get a couple cuttings for you.  My PM box is so full and it's hard to take the time to delete to make room for more.

Go DENVER!!

Suzi

I've seen in my neck of woods (PA, but also zone 6b) sometimes the big box stores will have Brown Turkey and Hardy Chicago figs for not too much. If you're just starting out, might be about the same cost as getting all the stuff for rooting. But it does make a good winter project, rooting.

Suzi: hey Suzi! That would be amazing! If you can, I understand if you can't, I appreciate the gesture either way! I would be growing them inside for a while until I think they are ready for the outside and then transplant them at my parents house! And I have an apartment outside of campus! I saw that California Brown Turkey was not a very good fig but I didn't want to be picky! Thanks for the response!

Ampersand: I will definitely look around! I would like to try my hand at growing a tree from scion tho!

Many people don't like the Brown Turkey, but I've eaten bucket loads, and loved them!

Gene: Yeah i've seen there are a few varieties! California Brow Turkey had bad ratings, many people thought thy were bland. The other varities of Brown Turkey seemed good tho!
