newbie question when to transplant

  • rx2

I did it finally did it. ROOTS on my negonne green cutting. They are about an inch long now. When do I transplant into dirt mix. Do I wait until roots are seen in the cup or put into dirt now. If I wait, should I feed it with liquid MG or just keep giving it warter.

Congrats rx2, I would like to help you but I root all cuttings in 1 gallon pots so they can stay there for quite some time. Again congrats and help will be on the way real soon.

Thanks, This is the first one that lived. The other two ended up as dead sticks. It started as a green cutting.

Pot it.

rx2, a little more information would be helpful.  What medium is your cutting in now and what will you be tranplanting into?  If your cutting is in spangum moss or coir then I would definitely go ahead and pot it up.  If it is in some sort of fast draining potting mix in a cup then there is no rush and may be reason to wait until the roots are more mature.  Also "dirt mix" makes one think of soil directly from the ground which would be a bad idea for container culture of a newly rooted cutting.

Right now it is in spangum moss. The longest 2 roots are maybe 1 inch. I was going to use MG potting mix with coir or perlite to pot it in.

Miracle grow is famous for gnats they say.

I agree with Charlie, MG potting mix usually come with gnats larvae and retains a lot of moisture, so you have to be very careful when watering

What media are you using.

See my sig for my propagation thread.

MG has urea and that can burn young roots plus it needs a bacteria colony to be fully broken down into something the plant can use.

You would be better off with a hydro solution if you are using peat or perlite to root your cuttings.

I would put it in perlite and either peat or coir.  It's not ready for a dense medium like MG but you don't want any long fiber sphagnum sticking to the roots.  If some does stick either cut it without getting near the root or keep as much as possible away from the root.  Sphagnum holds a lot of water - enough to rot a root.

Thanks all for the advice. Just the completely differrent from what I would have done. I have some organic mix called gardner and bloom. This potting soil is very loose compared to MG. Mix that 50/50 with perlite and water when dry. Trying to keep cost down and at the same time keep the tree alive. I think I am seing alittle green popping out of the brown thumb. Thanks again for all the advice.

What I like to do when its time to pot the cutting is to pre-dampend the mix first... mix it with just enough water in a separate pail so that it just clumps together but not getting it soaking wet though. Then add the dampened mix into the pot around the cutting lightly compressing the mix into the pot but not too much. Be careful with those roots they can break off easy.

If you just add dry potting mix and water it with the cutting it will usually not respond well from being too wet. The cutting and roots are quite sensitive to excess moisture at this point so the more care you take the better the chances of success.

Good luck with it :)

It got potted. I premoisten the mix and put it in a clear cup with drains so I can see the root growth. I am sure it would have ended up as dead stick number 3 without all the advice. Thanks again for all the help. Pictures to follow if the roots show up.

Yeah we got roots. Thanks for all the advice. Going to pot in a one gal pot. You all are going to turn me into a green thumb. Next project is an air layer in the spring for Charlie.fig 002.jpg

Looking really good.

Yay roots!  Air layer for me?

Not saying when to pot, but my experience says we all tend to be a little eager to move on to the next faze, so lean toward waiting a little longer at each phase than you heart says.

Thanks for the tip on waiting longer. The roots where turning a yellow-green and I thought that was bad. Then I saw a picture of a start and the cup was full of yellow-green roots. Leson learned Thank you. And yes Charlie an air layer in the spring. More questions to come then.
