Newbie-Rooting Cuttings

  • WL

Hi I am new to the forum.I have been able to root some cuttings. This is my first attempt at rooting fig cuttings and I have been excited by the results. The roots are pushing thru to the top of the cups. The plastic cups are 16 oz and clear. The cuttings are still in plastic cups, at what point do I plant them into the ground. I realize that it is still cold here in Virginia and I was not going to place them outside until the spring. Do I place them in pots and plant them in the ground next fall or do I wait longer to place them in the ground.  I am a newbie with figs so I appreciate your advice. The cuttings are Celeste, LSU Gold, LSU Purple. Kadota and several others. I guess I am starting to catch fig fever.

Welcome to the forum WL.

Welcome to the forum!

If you have have roots 1/2 way or more filling your cup I would carefully up-pot.

I do know that older trees handle the elements better than young trees.  I'm sure someone in your climate can advise with more detail.

Thanks Sas and Don

Welcome to the forum WL, a place of great members, great information, and great conversations.

Welcome. It looks like you have a good start on varieties to root. Good Luck.

1st year cuttings are tender.  You'd probably be best off (1) up-potting the cuttings this year to progressively larger pots (e.g., 1-3g now, 3-5 g in 2 months, maybe 5-10 g in June), (2) growing them in the pots in full sun, watering and fertilizing them appropriately, (3) overwintering them in the pots in a cool garage next winter, then (4) planting them in-ground next spring.  Just be careful transitioning them from indoor to outdoor light; the sun can burn indoor leaves.  Start the pots in full shade, then partial shade, then full sun.

These issues have been well discussed own this forum.  Do some searching and reading.
