Newly found unknown

Need help ID'ng newly found treasure.

Last week JSTALL told me about a man that was growing fig trees in a neighboring town (Linden, Tx), I went up to see, and while I did not find the man, I did find this tree.  Figs are really good.  The picts do not do justice to the color of the fig.  The inside is a brighter red and the skin is more yellowish green than shown.  The tree is somewhat squat in nature and there were a lot of suckers/pups which I harvested.  All figs were on new growth so I assume this is the main crop.  The owner could not tell me if there was an earlier crop as they are not fig people, and do not eat them.  The tree is 6 yrs old, 8-10 ft tall, and has never been pruned (and has never been frozen back to ground).  The figs seem to hang very well even to the stage of rot/sour.  No figs fell off in my hand.

As usual, your assistance in this very important matter is greatly appreciated, LOL

Congrats on your find, Danny!  Maybe you just got your wish list fig!!
Suzi

Possibly Battaglia

Danny,

It looks to be the same as my "Unknown Schaefer-A" which I believe is a Verte. 8-10' tall seems a bit small for a tree that has never been pruned. Mine was killed to the ground this past Winter and, despite having the terminal buds pinched off every few feet, it is already at about 7 feet and almost as wide. It did come back with a lot of shoots from the soil line. If I had not seen the leaves on the parent tree myself (approx 15' tall), I would not be so confident as to its identity. Weird thing is that the young trees have almost exclusively 5-lobed leaves with auricles.  I started my cuttings 12/6/09. btw, it does very well in a greenhouse during Winter too. Good find!

Ruben
That really looks like it.  Your picture of the whole tree is identical in shape and size.  Another source (outside the forum) said it might be a Snowden.

It is a nice eating fig, I put up 3 jars and the thing I noticed different was the number of seeds in the syrup.

Thx
a lot

umm...not even close. The ripe fruit at this age do have a nice crunch to them that I enjoy. Makes a great preserve (whole) with thin slices of lemon added into the mix. Can't say I recall the crunch in the mature tree fruits.

Nice crunch, I think you are right on it being a Verte, I don't know about the Battaglia, someone else suggested, they are both close, but your leaf is right on.

Now about your "Coranado", LOL

Eyes on Ruben's Verte slightly different.

It can vary from almost closed to small. Here are a cpl of the first main crop fruit from this season. Could have left them on a few more days. Still tasty though!
