NH drivewayfarm shots

I am Vito's wife.  Our driveway looks similar.  You have some really beautiful plants.  I am always complaining that there is an ever growing "asphalt fig grove" in our driveway and yard.  We have strangers stopping and asking if the trees are for sale.  I cannot park my car in the garage in the winter because the fig trees need protection.
I might have to start a FGA group  (fig growers anonymous) soon.

Any similar complaints from your better half?

Yes , almost the same exact complaints.
She is glad when someone drops by asking to buy a plant ,because I do sell some and it slowly opens up a little space.
She loves to eat the figs , so if I sometimes meet her as she arrives home with a bouquet of sweet peas and a fig or 2 , she is ok with it.

That's sweet. :)

I have a friend who is crazy about roses. She has so many that not only her yard, but her driveway is filled with pots of plants - as in the garage is blocked from use. She says that occasionally someone stops by thinking it's a nursery and wants to buy some of her beautiful plants.

Hi Kerry,

I love your photos. You have been an inspiration and it's great seeing the beautiful plants in your driveway!!!
I see that you used the 2 5 gallon bucket (global buckets) SWC system for some of your trees. This is my first year growing in this fashion. I started cuttings, and counter to conventional wisdom, after the cuttings rooted, I searched on the site and followed your path and nypd5229 's example. I now have 15 growing, and the growth has been amazing. Several are nearly 5 feet tall, from the top of the buckets. How long have you been able to keep the trees in the 5 gallon buckets? If the roots are pruned regularily, can you continue to grow in the buckets, knowing that you sacrifice yield, since you are growing in a smaller container? And one last question, after the trees go dormant, do you allow the medium to dry out almost completely?

All the Best!!!

Pat

Wow! What a beautiful and interesting set of pictures. You really have nice looking plants. I too like to have a few flowers for the bees and hummers but they are slowly being pushed aside. Your stuff is happy, that's obvious. Are those the 10 for $30 pails from Home Depot?

Quite a forest of figs! They sure look healthy.

Thanks again for your kind words.
The buckets I have been using are free , used , food grade plastic buckets from local bakery or from a salsa and salad dressing company I used to pass by frequently years ago. Most had icing or garlic or capers or peppers as their first inhabitants.
Pat , most of my plants are just in their 3rd season , so I am not sure about the longtime use of the 5 gallon sub-irrigated buckets as permanent homes.
But given my space restrictions I don't have much choice but to try it.
My sense is that with a root pruning every second or third year they should be able to give a good harvest and remain healthy. Root pruning this size of root ball is much easier than wrestling with a 25 gallon pot.
Given a choice , I would have them in buckets with holes in the sides and planted in the ground for the season. I have started putting some of my younger plants in 5 gallon RootMaker pots (with extra holes in the sides) in anticipation of finding a spot to plant them for the season.
I like to put the plants into storage damp , not too dried out. I try to make sure they are not too wet because my storage area is very humid.

Hhmmm! A drive thru Fig Farm!

Thanks Kerry!
Pat

that is impresive collection kerry

thanks for the pics, really motivating .

Look like a lot of work!  I'm sure the satisfaction outweighs the troubles though.

It is inspiring! the concrete bouncing heat may help them be so gorgeous! They look amazing and makes me very jealous!  My driveway looks nothing like yours and I am going to do something about mine.

They all look so healthy and strong, and there is still a spot for the car!

Kerry ,
Just Happy and Healthy looking figs, Hope to cross Path again.

Hi Kerry,

The plants look great. What type of figs are you growing? I live in Maine and I am just getting started but I hope one day my driveway looks as good as yours.

Kerry,
Thanks for sharing. Impressive and inspiring.

Kerry, how do you like those self water containers? I see that you do not cover the top, so there is evaporation and airation, unlike others I have seen, where they cover the top with plastic.  Do we want white or black pots?  I saw a japanese guy that only used white pots...I have lots of left over paints and painting those paint buckets would be a fun project.

I really like the self watering containers. The growth is excellent.
Adding a picture of an Ronde de Bordeaux in 5 gallon SIP that I am going to train with 2 main horizontal arms .
This is in its second season in this pot and if I pulled both arms down to level they are nearly as long as the van.
Of course RDB is just a fast grower anyway.
I don't cover the top because I like rainwater to reach the roots.
Light or dark colored pots depending on your zone and summer temps. Mine are used food grade buckets from bakeries etc... and I'm too lazy to paint them a different color.
Swizzle , I have around 60 varieties if all of my new cuttings root. Send me an email or PM through the forum and I can send you a few cuttings to start your Maine fig farm if you want.
Thanks to everyone for all the positive reinforcement in the recent posts here.

Kerry,

I love your photos.  It's fun to see how you do it.  fun to see where all my cuttings came from.

Remind us how many figs you get from each tree in a 5 Gal pot?  How many (and what kinds) from the 25 gal pots?

Thanks.
