Niagara Black

late last summer, one of the most generous forum member has sent me 3 Niagara Black cuttings. i killed one of them by accident. i mean accident as in i knocked it off the shelf and it more or less got crushed.

but two of them have survived the winter in my garage. one of them was mauled by one of my puppies.

but both are coming back very strong. this is the one that was not touched by the puppy.

i'm in the pine state. noticed the amount of pollen on that leaves. we have yellow haze going on right now..

Pretty fig, Pete. We are choking on the pollen over here, too.

Keep it up Pete! All it takes is one.

Pete - Nice.  I have one of these about this size, from a very kind fourm member, it is only just starting to leaf out as it has been so cold up here.

I hope they grow quickly this year, mine was slow last year.

Pete, I am glad to see that you have had success with the cuttings. We all owe a big thanks to John Parav from Toronto. It was a real treat meeting him last September and getting the backyard fig tour. He is a genuinely great guy. His wish was to spread this fig far and wide, it is so good.

FMD,

that's good to know. once the tree is grown enough for cuttings, i'll share them freely as always. right now the trees are too small to do much of anything with, and i'm not ready to share/trade the extra tree yet. as always, i want to make sure any cuttings or trees that i share/trade will be in good condition. i would hate to see any cuttings or trees i shared/traded just dying on other members.

those leaves..ah.. those leaves... gorgeous.. no need of figs.. just look at them!

Looks great Pete, leaves will get even prettier and the figs are excellent tasting.

Nice job Pete , I'm glad they worked out for you . Everyone that received cuttings from that batch (late summer ) had good success .
Frank , thanks . I really enjoyed meeting you and your brother last fall , make sure to give a call if you're in town again . I think when you were here the tree was about 7 feet tall . It's now about 4 feet due to a major pruning which allowed me to share all those cuttings .
I am confident now that this variety won't be lost and can enjoy some fruit .
For those who have it , it likes to sucker so you will get new plants for air layer regularly .
Also if anyone has any pics , it would be great to see them .

John

john is indeed a great guy
thank you john

Thanks, John!  I'll get some photos up as soon as I get home.

I can't to try this one as well, I can't wait until I have them permanently outside and in the ground.

The leaves are so beautiful! They remind me a mix of a fig and a European oak.
Johnparav, do you know if I can buy the cuttings of this variety online? (I assume your tree is already over pruned)

Greenfig , sorry I'm all out , and have never sold any , just given away , and in a couple cases was given something in return .
By the end of this summer there should be a bunch of people with plants large enough for taking cuttings .

Eli , thanks . Hope all is well with you and yours .

Bob , that would be great .

And a huge thanks to the Fig Fairy that went to major lengths in distributing all the cuttings and plants . Mind you I wouldn't call him that to his face :) But the thought of him in a tootoo holding a wand is a little disturbing now that I think about it .

John

hmm.. fig fairy. that's a good one :)

edit: by the way.. thanks, john.. for finding this wonderful fig :)

Keep us posted, Niagara Black is on the radar but I have to be more selective now.
Not sure how it happened but I'm close to max capacity.

John, just a little creativity will double your capacity!   Dream big!  :)

Haha, I do like to have some veggies and a couple dwarf fruit trees tho.
Note I did not say I was actually at capacity.
I'm sure a few of you folks have varieties I could squeeze in LOL
Hopefully have good weather this season and start to really evaluate different varieties as well as feedback from others.

at under 50 varieties or so figs, i have called stop to my collection. from here on, it will just be more of super desirable and rare types.. maybe one or two a year. keeping the figs in container keeps the space limit very tight. might start digging the ground and planting them, but the heavy clay around here isn't all that ideal.

That's why they sell peat moss and compost, Pete.

As promised:

There's 1 more somewhere...

Good job Bob ,

Its hard to miss those leaves when looking through the fig forest .
They look nice and healthy .
Now if only we could get some good weather , its been damn cold and windy up here the last few days .

John

I'm with Grasa - ooooh those leaves !!

i wonder if the leave change as they mature. the new leaves have more "shape" then the older ones.

Almost a maple leaf eh?

Thought that was appropiate given the origin. :)
