I'm excited to try this one. I noticed the first fig swelling on Sept 4th. Just 2 days later its drooping.. getting soft and turning colour. A second one is starting to swell now too as you can see in the pics. I hope to see the drip of honey John described when he introduced this one.

The drop of honey is deceptive, it drips well before ripe so you should exercise patience when harvesting it.

Yes, I see the resemblance to a certain extent, but I am no expert. Regardless, it's a good-looking fig and anything that grows in Z6a is exciting to see.

Hi tylerj,
Nice fig. Funny my lda is ripening with the same schedule as your Niagara black.
Your figs look to be the same as the ones of my lda. The leaves are a match as well.
I never saw a drip of honey on "Longue d'aout" - but the global darkening of the skin and especially around the eye will let me decide when to take mine.

Hi Tylerj,
In some days when they will be fully ripe ... Patience is a virtue ! Especially when growing figs .
I'll open a post about my lda .

Luckey you.Tyler, I have no fruit that will mature this year. Not sure what happened but every plant sat dumb and frozen in June and July. The nb is in the third year, so grew up and put on significant structural branches, but no fruit. It was from a small sucker shoot from Jon, so I think younger in maturity than some cuttings. But still, what a horrible year for me.

It was starting to split open with the rain we continue to have so I took it off today. The bottom half had intense flavour and I'm sure had I been able to leave it a few more days that would have just gotten even better. A very good fig for sure! Here are some more pics taken over the last few days.

Very nice looking fig!!

Interesting that people are saying like LdA and some say LdA looks Melanzana.

If it is cold hardy then IMO it is a super keeper!

Hi Tylerj,
How old is your tree ? How is her growth ?
Have you been able to propagate her through root-shoots ? Cuttings ie does the tree allow for ?
To what other figs are you comparing those ? - The reason for this last question, is that I find lda to be a fig in her own class.
I wouldn't try to compare lda to another fig like my ufti/mont etna ( too much honeyer and flesh not so dense ), Sultane ( fig too small to compare), Brownturkey ( flesh not dense enough), Dalmatie ( flesh not dense enough) ...
I really like how lda's flesh is dense .

JDS I have 2 trees from cuttings (sourced from John Parav through another member) started 2 years ago this fall. This one was pruned heavily for cuttings last year and is only 2' tall in a 3 gallon pot. I planted another in ground in my greenhouse this summer that is about 3' tall and hope it produces some brebas next year. So they are just small trees. I've had a few figs from about 10 other varieties in my young collection but none compare to this one in appearance. I don't have lda though.

Hey Tyler ,

Don't waste your time with the breba , they are not good and it slows down main crop .
Too bad the weather is so crappy this summer , I have so many varieties of trees loaded with fruit that won't ripen .
Nice to see the NB ripening with proper colour on the outside , others growing it have not posted the colours I see . But definitely not what it should be inside ,needs to drip honey for a few days , more heat and less rain .

When properly ripe it should be deep dark red inside from my experience (only 1 year of ripe figs from it) but I let it drip honey for about a week before picking which was just right when the weather was colder.

Thx for the tips guys... I think I will move the pot in the greenhouse if rain is in the forecast to let the others on it ripen further. My problem is not having an abundance of figs ripening at once in my young collection it makes exercising patience all that much harder lol.

I have the following Longue d'Aout, Melanzana Merdoscola, Slocan and the newest addition is Niagara Blk.
So far I found LDA, Melanzana Merdoscola and Slocan are the same fig but differ in names. Niagara Blk pic
does resemble the above. My NB is young and has 2 figs on it. Next season would make it easier for me to
id it. Anyway LdA main crop is very tasty.

Hi Paul... I was impressed with the flavour of the NB too. But even more impressed that it ripened figs given our crappy cold and wet summer we've had here.

Yes, my LdA is ripening too. Anyway, lots of main crop ripening. I certainly hope my NB is not LdA as I have
2 large in-ground tree. If it is, I would give NB to a good home here. BTW I have given away one of the 2 LdA
in ground tree  -- to be carted away by Feb2015.

and one last Niagara Black showing similar ripening colours and spots

If there is a difference... I don't see it lol. It is such a unique looking fig with the ribbing and spots. The leaves match also.

This is how it starts and drips for days

This is what it looks like when finally ripe

This is what it looks like inside

The only thing that seems to differentiate Longue d'out and Niagara black seems to be that NB drips honey for days .
I have been told that LD does not . Anyone growing LD see dripping ?
NB may be a strain of LD that has this feature , like regular Adriatic vs JH Adriatic . Don't know just an thought .
Either way , its still my favourite .

Hi Johnparav,
Does your Niagara black split bad ?
My lda does. I will update my thread in the next days .
I had 3 figs split bad and the last one did not ... not the same weather on the 4 figs from the same small tree ???

jdsfrance,   my niagara black that I have pictured above did split (1" across the eye) which was partly why I took it when I did. The heavy rains we had the day before likely caused that for me.

I saw that LDA is another name for " Jerusalem fig"  mentioned here:  http://www.figuiers.com/plants-de-figuiers.html

HOUSTON....... WE HAVE HONEY!!  lol

This fig (niagara black) drooped and changed colour almost 2 weeks ago. So patience is definitely needed to see honey.

Will you be picking it soon?  Wonder how it compares to the one you picked early?

Hey Tyler ,

It looks like you are getting a lot of moisture there or may be watering a lot .
I am a couple a couple hours drive from you and its been sunny and warm for the past week
and no splitting . I don't see any wrinkling on the skin either , but if it starts opening up like that
then you can't wait too long .
Its nice to see the honey drip though .

John, I've actually tried to keep it quite dry over the last 2 weeks but we did get a lot of rain just before that. I went ahead and picked them due to them starting to split. They were nice and syrupy and had a great flavour. It is going in ground next year though along with many other potted varieties I have.

Tyler

Niagara Black 0929c.jpg

Niagara Black 0929a.jpg

Near the neck of the fig didn't ripen all the way but since it was splitting I didn't want to risk losing it. Under better conditions maybe it could have gone another few days at least.
Niagara Black 0929b.jpg

If anything this thread serves as a good lesson for newbies like me that figs need to be left alone as long as possible before picking. This fig would have been "edible" 2 weeks ago.. being completely soft and drooping straight down....but would not have had the flavour the bottom 2/3rds had on this one.

Hey Tyler ,

It does look a lot better than the previous fig you picked .
I guess we should consider ourselves lucky for getting any figs this year
after the coolest summer in recent memory .
Most of the varieties I'm picking are a lot less flavourful than other years ,
but I haven't picked a NB yet , but they are almost there .
I am certain you will eventually  get some figs that will knock your socks off
but it will take another season or two .
thanks for sharing your thoughts on this variety .

Just tasted one these babies.
I will post pictures in the next tasting.

one of the best for sure, the growth character and fruit size and shape make it a must in any collection  :)
and ripened well in a non-sunny area ,probably that makes it a good choice for cold regions.

Thanks for the contributor again.

I put mine in ground this spring and that seems to have delayed ripening... I haven't had one yet but I hope they start to swell soon. I might just have to pot it up again for next year.

John I struggle with patience also lol. Maybe some day when they are ripening by the dozen rather one at a time.

Hi Eli.. yes that one looks like it was picked really early. The skin didn't start changing colour yet lol. If you can let it wait until it turns dark burgundy the flavour is amazing. I just had one that had been dripping honey for a week and it had a nice RICH figgy taste. Makes your eyes pop when you get that intense flavour :)
