Niagara Black ripening

Hi Johnparav,
Does your Niagara black split bad ?
My lda does. I will update my thread in the next days .
I had 3 figs split bad and the last one did not ... not the same weather on the 4 figs from the same small tree ???

jdsfrance,   my niagara black that I have pictured above did split (1" across the eye) which was partly why I took it when I did. The heavy rains we had the day before likely caused that for me.

Tyler

I saw that LDA is another name for " Jerusalem fig"  mentioned here:  http://www.figuiers.com/plants-de-figuiers.html

HOUSTON....... WE HAVE HONEY!!  lol

This fig (niagara black) drooped and changed colour almost 2 weeks ago. So patience is definitely needed to see honey.

Looks nice!  You are a patient man Tyler!
Will you be picking it soon?  Wonder how it compares to the one you picked early?

Hey Tyler ,

It looks like you are getting a lot of moisture there or may be watering a lot .
I am a couple a couple hours drive from you and its been sunny and warm for the past week
and no splitting . I don't see any wrinkling on the skin either , but if it starts opening up like that
then you can't wait too long .
Its nice to see the honey drip though .

John

John, I've actually tried to keep it quite dry over the last 2 weeks but we did get a lot of rain just before that. I went ahead and picked them due to them starting to split. They were nice and syrupy and had a great flavour. It is going in ground next year though along with many other potted varieties I have.

Near the neck of the fig didn't ripen all the way but since it was splitting I didn't want to risk losing it. Under better conditions maybe it could have gone another few days at least.

If anything this thread serves as a good lesson for newbies like me that figs need to be left alone as long as possible before picking. This fig would have been "edible" 2 weeks ago.. being completely soft and drooping straight down....but would not have had the flavour the bottom 2/3rds had on this one.

Hey Tyler ,

It does look a lot better than the previous fig you picked .
I guess we should consider ourselves lucky for getting any figs this year
after the coolest summer in recent memory .
Most of the varieties I'm picking are a lot less flavourful than other years ,
but I haven't picked a NB yet , but they are almost there .
I am certain you will eventually  get some figs that will knock your socks off
but it will take another season or two .
thanks for sharing your thoughts on this variety .

Just tasted one these babies.
I will post pictures in the next tasting.

one of the best for sure, the growth character and fruit size and shape make it a must in any collection  :)
and ripened well in a non-sunny area ,probably that makes it a good choice for cold regions.

Thanks for the contributor again.

I also tried my first one last week from a small tree that had 6 figs on it , well 5 now .....should of stayed longer but I couldn't wait......will try to get pictures on the next one ...

Its funny,  mine had six too (5 left ) its first fruiting year :)

I put mine in ground this spring and that seems to have delayed ripening... I haven't had one yet but I hope they start to swell soon. I might just have to pot it up again for next year.

John I struggle with patience also lol. Maybe some day when they are ripening by the dozen rather one at a time.

Hi Tyler.
I have two Longue D'Aout trees that I think ARE THE SAME AS Niagara black and Norland.
Its one of my favorite fig, the figs are early, huge and delicious. I'm in zone 4
Enjoy yours.
Vito

Lol

Vito Hi, I noticed that my NB fruit has a hairy texture to its skin untill fully ripened did you notice that too?

Thanks Vito... and thanks JohnParav for this great find!

Elin,I haven't noticed, but I will look later.
Vito

Hi Eli.. yes that one looks like it was picked really early. The skin didn't start changing colour yet lol. If you can let it wait until it turns dark burgundy the flavour is amazing. I just had one that had been dripping honey for a week and it had a nice RICH figgy taste. Makes your eyes pop when you get that intense flavour :)
