Nice idea for potted fig trees!!!

That Is Nice, Good Fine............

I've seen it done with other types of trees but never with figs, what a great idea!

Anyone familiar with the technique?  Are they just tying the limbs together with zip ties and letting them marry up naturally or are they cutting a section of bark from both limbs where they touch, almost like in grafting?

I might have to give this a try this summer!  Love the idea of having white & dark fig growing in together in the same pot.

Most likely twisting the stems and letting them grow together over time.

That's a really tempting idea. Thank you for sharing it Eli.

Interesting indeed. I'm sure it will work, but there is some maintenance involved. Making sure you have the ones with the same vigor together, otherwise you'll need to prune one and not the other. Imagine growing a black madeira with a hardy chicago, HC grows 10 times faster.

For some reason that gave me an hilarious visual and I just started laughing.

I noticed they recommended watering every other day during the summer...that sounds a bit much.  It has me concerned about my watering schedule for my potted figs.  Ive been watering it once a week since the rainy season ended this spring.

Now its starting to heat up here in Los Angeles and Im wondering if Im doing my figs harm with my watering plan.  Perhaps the soil/medium this company uses requires the heavy watering...my pots are using HP ProMix...I wonder if they require such watering.  My plan has been to water when the top inch or so of soil is dry.  So far, this as resulted in moist, but not soggy soil where the root mass near the surface resides.

How are others watering their potted figs in weather similar to Los Angeles?

this is great since it is possible to gain tree like object without all the weight etc...

CJ, I went back to the web site and they are in Sebastopol, CA 95472

I am in SE Texas and water at least 2x a week if not 3 depending if we got rain or it was just hot. I think it is very dependant on where you are, where the trees are in relation to the sun, what potting mix you use. Only general directions can be given without all the other info to factor in.
Bottom line is...if your trees are happy you're doing it right!

cjwilson,
I am in LA too, I found that the self watering pots are more convenient, eps. over the last two freaking days...
It has been so hot that event a persimmon started wilting, I think the weather set a high temp record.
You can get them in a Target or a Walmart, quite cheap and they come in different sizes.

I am more worried about the LA squirrels now. Those guys like to bit the fig tips off :(
I had a nice Black Madeira pushing some beautiful leaves until yesterday. Not any more ..
