No Ripe Figs

For the last few years my fig tree has put on many immature figs, none of which ever get ripe.  I used to get lots of wonderful figs off of this tree. The tree is a transplant given to me from an old friend.Any Ideas?

Has it gotten frozen back more than normal the last couple yrs? If so that would explain the later fruiting that doesn't mature many fruit.

Yes, let us know what zone you are in.  By the way, welcome to the forum!  I agree with Steve that if your tree had a lot of cold damage (like mine) then fruit development will be delayed.  It may be delayed to the point where the season is not long enough to ripen the figs.  The last two winters were brutal in the northeast.

I also have some older fig trees that grew very fast from soil line, this Spring and only now are forming fruits.
It is the result of extremely cold Winters,2 years in a row.
Try to protect them better during Winter, using better methods, like I will be doing next Winter.
I found a shrub cover,is called Nu Vue,and is sold on internet.
I bought 10 of those and I will stuff the tree with a lots of leaves and cup it with this Shrub cover.
We will see next Spring,if it works.
However,I do have a couple of cultivars that produced a lot of early fruits ,after die down, but they are exception,to the rule.

Edit note So The rule is:The more live old wood you have,in the Spring, the better the chance your tree will ripe fruits.

thanks to all three of you for your thoughts. Yes the last two springs I had to cut out a lot of dead wood from my tree. I also on several occasions had deer eating the bark off of my tree and I bet that with the cold winters we had here in Central Ar had something to do with my problems. Maybe its time to cut it off and start a new tree. Thanks again

Hi lbfoto1401,
Welcome to the forum.
Cutting that tree to get a new one, won't help if the problems are related to its place.
It could help if you have a long season fig and you'll go for a shorter season fig though.
Central Ar is in which type of Zone ? usda Zone 5 ? Zone6? Zone7? Zone8...

For this season you may have no figs as it is too late to react now.
But you could prepare next season ! Patience is a key with tree culture ! - fig trees especially ...

I would make sure that deers no longer have access to the tree.
I would plan some manure for next spring late March - you could top dress with dirt from the nurseries too - manure is better.
Can you post a pic of the tree ? After die-back, they tend to send tens of shoots and you should thin the herd to keep lets say 3 or 5 .
Do you know the strain of fig tree ? The color of the ripe figs ?
Have you been protecting her with a winter protection ?
If you want ideas, search the forum, especially a thread on the 80 liters trashcan winter protection by me ;P .
You could try a potted fig tree. You could propagate your tree and keep the siblings in pots (4 gallons ).
Don't give up ! Figs are just so good ! ... And you can't buy them :( at the store.
If you have some space left in your yard, you could add another fig tree though ...
