Noire de Barbentane 2015

In past years, this fig was more of a dark purple color. This year, they are Noire! Excellent tasting fig.

That is a beautiful fig, Leon.
I hope the taste matches or exceeds it looks.

I have a plant but has not shown its colours yet. I hope it does so this year and survive raccoons attack.

That is one beautiful fig!

Mine is still a few weeks away, Leon. Thanks for showing me what I have to look forward to. It's a beauty.

Does anyone know the difference between borjasotte noir and noir de berbatane? I ask because I may have mixed up the two.

Hi Leon.
Very nice looking fig, enjoy.
Vito

Hi Leon,

You know how to grow and take the most beatiful photos. Excellent looking fig.

Best,
Navid.

Very beautiful fig Leon, and nice size.  I am assuming your hand is not the size of a 6 year old's.  :)

Thank you Navid!

THANKS A LOT ED!!! LoL

Looks like a great fig.  The fruit looks very much like Black Madeira/Figo Preto.  Is the flavor profile similar to those figs or something altogether different?

Beautiful fig!

Steve:
You are right. This fig does resemble Black Madeira/Figo Preto however it is different.
When ripe, it's texture is meaty and the taste has some rich berry tones whereas BM/Preto has a syrup texture when ripe and the taste is intensely berry flavored! That's just my opinion.

In your opinion, if one has Bourjasotte Noire, should they seek out this one as well?

Thanks!

From reading about it, Noire de Babentane and Bourjasotte Noire are closely related. They are different as follows.

NDB ripens two weeks earlier than the Bourjasotte Noire.
Better performance in humid conditions.
It has smaller and slightly lighter fruit than the Bourjasotte Noire,
The shape of the fruit is slightly flattened vs a perfectly cylindrical Bourjasotte Noire.

As far as flavor is concerned it is subjective.

Leon, Does your Noire de Barbentane form a honey drop when ripe?

Beautiful looking fig Leon.

If you equate Bourjassote Noire with Violette Sollies then Noire de Barbentane and VS are equivalent in taste IMO. I grew both side by side and the observations I made were exactly what Sas described in #14. In fact I gave my Violette Sollies to a friend who lives in southern New Mexico because of his extended season and kept NdB because it does start to ripen a little earlier.

I have not observed a honey drop from my Noire de Barbentane as of yet.

Leon, Thank You for clarifying this difference i.e. drop of honey or lack of. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the weather, the variety itself or perhaps picking it too early.
Please let us know if the drop of honey ever shows up. I intend to grow the Noire de Barbentane here in Texas for comparison purposes when I get a chance.
Also, I'm currently growing a small Bourjasotte Noire for that same purpose. I guess it makes sense that a certain variety would perform totally differently from its cousin in the same zone and the only way to be sure which one does better is to grow both side by side under the same conditions and give them enough time.

Wow, now that is a fig!!

Leon (now that I have your attention) I've sent you a couple emails in the past week or so.  Have you received them?  Thanks :)

Steve- I will look at my spam folder. No I have not received any lately.  Thanks and sorry.

I would like to know if any of the two subject varieties have a fair breba production?

Thanks

Hi Eli

Noire de Barbentane and Bourjasotte Noire are both unifera that means only main crop produced no brebas sorry.

Interestingly, I have a Sicilian variety that the main crop looks very similar except it produces a ton of brebas.
The fig was identified as Gisotta Nero;
